The GEAUX ZONE Construction Has Begun - Page 2

Good choice.

Any pics of the current construction progress?

Here's a couple pics. Not much going on inside, electrician should be pulling wire this week and A/C guy is supposed to move the vents to the vertical part of the soffit from the underside.

The 2 windows on the left are where the theater is. We will have Bahama Shutters over those windows and they will be drywalled over from the inside.

Here's the Soffit- borrowed the design from Chinadog's Blazing Ridge Theater (much thanks!) Probably implemented by my carpenter a bit differently but same idea.

What kind of theater seats are you using?

Haven't thought about the seats except to check the general size. Any recommendations?

We are about ready to start on the rock! All of the A/C, Electrical, and Audio is in. I ended up with a 6 zone GrafikEye +Curtains (new product coming out soon) that will do Sconces, Step Lights, Rope Lights, 4" cans in soffit, and 6" cans in the ceiling. We are wired for 7.2 with both subs up front.

A/C guy finally moved the vents to shoot out from the side of the soffit. Thought it would be nice to blow accross the width of the room vs directly down on me. Plus it forced a few bends since the unit is very close.

Here's a shot of the upper screen wall- you can see the power for the curtains

Side wall next to door- you can see the step light, sconce, speaker wire

Lower screen wall with the cables/ power for speakers/ subs.

I have 2 windows- painters put some sort of glaze on and will paint over the glaze with flat black. Supposedly the entire pane of glaze & paint will peel right off if someone buys the place and doesn't want a theater. We're doing a layer of half inch rock which will be flush with the window jam, then another layer of half inch right over the top of the windows.

how are you going to pass code for egress in a fire if the windows are covered? Have you looked into this (do you need a sprinkler system if no windows?)....you may want to look into this, possibly get cert of occ THEN drywall over them.....

Fire code, interesting.....you think it is required to have windows in every room? Room is on the second floor, windows do not open, not a bedroom.

My builder seems on the ball when it comes to code, so thinking it is not an issue, but it is worth mentioning for sure.

Update- builder confirmed egress only required for bedrooms, not theater, office, gym, etc

I covered over a window once with thick visquine. I ended up having condensation problems in the cavity between window and visquine. You may want to consider this in your solution.

Thanks for the heads-up. They painted this plastic coating on the glass, not sure what it is, but there is no air space. Double pane window, should be ok I reckon.

I'll take a couple more pics today. They painted the glass black now, looks like a dark room from the outside. We'll insulate and rock over the window next week.

Looks like a ceiling mount, think that's the direction I'm headed as well. Components will be on the other side of the closet.

Anyone else got a PJ mounted in an adjacent room?

Are you doing double sheetrock and Green Glue in addition to the staggered stud wall?

Going to try single layer 5/8", double 1/2" on the outside wall to cover the windows. The screenwall is adjacent to the Gym and Balcony, left side is adjacent to bar/ gameroom, part of which is a closet and the rest is a niche where my arcade games are going. The back wall is where the equipment room is and the right side is an exterior wall. I really don't have any adjacent living/ bedrooms that aren't buffered by another room.

Given the above I didn't think it worth the effort, hassle, expense to do the GG sandwich. I'll spend that money on better doors which is where I'm going to lose most of my sound anyway.

That is going to be one fine looking home theater, you still leaning toward the RS1, that is also the one I'm looking to get unless something else comes along between now and Oct.

Paul,
I'm coming over from the CEDIA thread. I like the look very much. I especially like your changing the entrance that will be great addition to the look of the room and will be much less distracting when folks go in and out as they will during the movie.

I love the fact that you have a nice high ceiling this will add tons to the feel of space.

I might suggest considering acoustic treatments, going with a 12" high stage for looks and I didn't get your riser heights. With a 12' ceiling go higher. It will be sure to give great sight lines and add to the stadium feel.

Thanks Art, I really like your idea of going higher on the riser. I was at 12", but maybe I go 24" and 12" on the first row. Only issue is how to get to 24". I was going to do the steps at the entrance outside the theater so when you go through the doors you are already on the riser. Maybe I can squeeze another step or two inside the door.....

Stage height @ 12" might be nice as well, although I don't want to do anything more to encourage my wife and her freinds from thinking that the stage is for them to perform. No touching the screen!! Although.....women perfroming on stage not such a bad thing......

Acoustical treatments- Any suggestions at this stage? Drywall going in this week and next. I was thinking of lining the underside of the sofitt with (linacoustic?) then wrapping cloth over it so the entire sofitt is black GOM. I'm leaving a 1" lip like Chinadog's Blazing Ridge Theater. Really liked his design. Going to do the entire room in GOM so think I have ulimate flexibility in treatments.

The rock is up, taped, & floated. Not sure what the floated part is but it's done! Hopefully get started on the stage and riser in a couple weeks.

The Entrance will get black granite tiles on the face, light boxes between the entrance and the doorway, red lacquer doors with portholes and giant stainless handles.

Shot of the bevel on the soffit -borrowed the design idea from Chinadog-thanks again.

Shot of the 2 A/C vents above the soffit

Autostitch of the screenwall. Blue tape outline is 6' X 12'. You can also see the windows are now covered by rock.

Ready to get started on the Riser and Stage. Here's the layout:

I would have liked to go higher on the riser as Art suggested but I'd have to make another step just inside the door to make it work. I'll get the 12" Riser in then see what it looks like.

I did change the stage to 12", but that lead me to a concern......

I've got 11' under the sofitt. 12" stage + 24" for subs/center + 60" High screen + 4" borderX2 = 28" or so above the screen. Is that going to be where I want the screen? 40" off the floor?

Need opinions on this design to do a 18" riser vs 12" since I've got 12' ceilings. As you enter you would be on a 12" high landing area that would step up another 6" to the back row. Art made the suggestion about doing a higher riser since I have 12' celings.

Paul,

Nice soffit! Your build is coming along nicely, keep it up! Looking forward to more pictures.

Thanks Bud! I'm trying to replicate your soffit with the black cloth as well-looks dynamite. I promise not to do a blue ceiling, well not the same blue anyway!
I just swapped out the frosted white rope light for blue. It's blue on blue now and a different look. I'll probably build some star ceiling panels and wrap them in dark blue or black. May take a few months before I get there. I do like the black soffits though!

I was thinking blue fiber with a really dark blue/indigo ceiling. Probably end up with rope lighting once I blow the budget on everything else. Good thing is I have accessible attic above so easy to swap any of the lighting out.

Since this got no play on the Speaker forum.....I'll ask here.

Krell/ Anthem/ B&W Play Well Together?
I was planning on going with the following:

Fronts - B&W 804S
Center - B&W HTM3S
Sides - B&W DS8
Rears - B&W DS8
Subs - B&W ASW750 X 2
Anthem AVM50
Anthem MCA 50 & 30

How would this setup work out?

Fronts - Krell Resolution 2
Center - Krell Resolution C
Sides - B&W DS8
Rears - KrB&W DS8
Subs - Velodyne DD-15 (2)
Anthem AVM50
Anthem MCA 50 & 30

I need wall-mountable sides and rears so will the B&W DS8's be OK with the other Krell speakers or should I go get some Resolution 4's?

I'll be doing Movies and Music about equally.

Thanks in advance,
Paul

Can't help you too much. I've never gotten too good an answer on why to avoid mix-n-match speakers.

What I have heard is that to preserve the illusion of surround sound, if the same sound rotates around the room from speaker to speaker you don't want to hear different sounds from the different speakers. In general, that has implied the same or similar tweeter and mid on the surrounds as on the fronts, and crossover designs for all that attempt to give the same shape (similar dips, etc.)

How much that matters in a real movie (when you are hearing birds chirping and leaves rustling in the background, or maybe gunshots, but rarely a clear sound rotating around you).

The sub question is easier. I think you can safely mix and match the subs/speakers, especially if you are setting the speakers to 'small' and using the sub for <80Hz.

Thanks pmeyer, think I'll do the Krell Resolution 4's for side/rear. Maybe do Velodyne subs.

Stage and riser are in. Linacoustic has been delivered and ready to be installed on the screenwall and soffitt.

A shot of the entrance- step risers will be Ceelite with some type of stone on the treads. Lightboxes on either side. Doors will be Red Lacquer with giant stainless handles.

A shot of the riser- 12" Overall filled with loose insulation left over from the walls, topped with 2 layers of 3/4" plywood with roofing felt between. I had the cabinet guy build me an Equipment Rack with adjustable shelves. I've had middle atlantic before, done showing off, went for functional this time.

Blue tape is 12'W 2.4 CIH. Stage is 12"H filled with sand, topped with 2 layers of 3/4" plywood with roofing felt between. Cost me $2500 for the carpenter to build the complete stage, riser, and entrance- a bargain at twice the price.

A really like how the curve on the steps worked out

Soffit and ceiling have been painted with SW Peppercorn gray. Soffitt will get treated with linacoustic and covered in black GOM.
