Also, WHY are people ordering from shop.com and not Tiger Direct-ly?

To save $30. Who knew it would be such a pain in the ass? I guess buy.com has me spoiled.

Lets get some settings/calibrations listed for this bad boy.

They have a $30 coupon code "shp30". Also you can get cashback from ebates by going to shop.com from their site.

I finally got the whole rig set up and actually got to experience the PH 530 in full DTS glory. Just finished watching "The Bee Gees - One Night Only". All I can say is Wow, there really is no substitute for a big screen. It's amazing how a big screen and big sound compliment each other.
I will have my setup kinda running by next weekend so we will see what its like on a 10' DW screen!! I am curious to get some settings from others on this PJ.. which do you guys prefer, Avia or Essentials...I need to get one
post #308 of 1027
Avia is more for people who need step by step instructions and it explains everything. Essentials is more for people who kinda know what they are doing.

I hope TD still has this projector (ph530). I have it in my cart with the Ultra 100 16:9 Manual Projector Screen. However I just saw the Elite M84UWH 84 Inch Diagonal for the same price. Other than the size difference any thoughts on which is better for this projector? Sorry, I'm a newbie in the HT arena. (maybe I should call them)
Both are good but draper is better , the best ones are the Draper V and the Draper Elite.
As for the projector get it before they run out ,don't hesitate or it will be too late.

Thanks for your input lou. Both were $89 at TD so I'll call them this morning and get the Ultra with the pj.

Even though I just purchased one of these units, I have to be honest about my slight skepticism about this Projector, mainly because of the name brand. Dont get me wrong, I bought an Acer Laptop earlier this year for a friend and they've had no problems with it to date. But... Acer is still not a name brand that is synonymous with quality, as far as I am concerned.

Being an owner, I'd like nothing more than for this product to turn out to be a true bargain and solid performer in the end. There is suspicion that this unit might be a clone of the HD70, as they share many similarities. If that is indeed the case, then being an HD70 owner, I would be more than confident in the product and my purchase. But I suspect that this unit is in fact NOT a clone of the HD70 and if this is true I feel, in light of the incredible price and the user reviews so far, this unit needs a review from one of the "big-wigs" in the projector forum, in order to be taken seriously and perhaps seal the deal on it's performance.

At this price, we dont need fireworks... but even if it's almost in league with units like the HD100U & HD70, then we'd all have more than enough reason to be happy.

Is there anyway we can get Art, Kras, Cavu, RedDog, Blitz, cyberheater or any of the other experienced Projector Reviewers to anoint this unit?

At this price I'm willing to take a chance. He who hesitates is lost.

A couple of those may be willing to do it. All you need to do is ask them, then send them your projector for a couple weeks . I'll throw in $5 to help cover the shipping costs. Anyone else?

Last night I got the projector up and running. Projecting from about 12.5' away onto a 106" 1.0 gain white pull down screen. At full zoom it can just fill the screen. It's pretty quiet and does push out some warm air. On cooldown after about 2 hours of use I could hear the plastic body contract from the shift in temp, not an alarming sound at all just a curious moment.

OK, I was running a pb6200 for 3 years. It's 4:3 1024x768 and spider696969 says it's apples and oranges. Well, there was no WOW value over the pb6200. The picture is certainly crisp and the color reproduction out of the box was better than I anticipated and better than the pb6200 for sure but already having a projector and putting up $611 shipped from Amazon... that $611 may not be worth it (for me). I would say there was a 15% improvement in clarity at that screen size. Brightness was a bit less than my pb6200. With some ambient light it washed out the theater mode rather quickly. The bright mode held up fairly well w/ modest ambient light. I like the 6200 over the ph530 on light output.

Overall the projector is a slam dunk if you don't have one already. As a first projector I would have WOWED for a month on this one. As my second.. it's sadly a yawn over my 6200 and although I'de like to keep it I can't justify the price for the 15% bump. My wife shrugged her shoulders at it and wondered why I bothered. I'm kinda in her camp here. HD looks great via component. SD, well, is sd but looks ok. Screen door.. no problem, not there at 10'. Ceiling mounted and throw was roughly the same as 6200. If I had a 6100 I'de keep the ph530, but I think it's going back. I'll try and post pics so y'all can see how nice the pic is.. and it is... but...

I'm switching back to the 6200 tonight and we'll see how that feels stepping back 15%.
It's oranges and tangerines.

spankle, nice review. You have said basically what I did. A very nice inexpensive PJ for someone trying to upgrade from a 480p PJ or someone that is new to PJs. Since you already had a higher resolution PJ I don't think you would benefit much from it... coming from the infocus 4805 world I noticed it right away.

You really can't argue with a price sub $600. Curious how much did you spend on the PB6200? It's all relative. I just think we are at the point where image quality differences will not be noticed that much... what is the difference between a $600 PJ and a $3000 PJ, about 10-15%. You are still going to get an excellent image.

Nice review.
the ph530 is the higher res projector but the 6200 still has talent left in her.
I paid $1500 for it 3 years ago. Crazy money when you think about todays offerings. If I only paid $611 on my 1st projector as nice as this is... I'de be giddy! I guess I'll wait for the next round of projectors or until mine loses a lamp. On 2nd lamp but 1st lamp still worked past 3400 hours... just thought I'd flip it out since I had a lamp from the free lamp offer on the 6200. I'll review another contender in about 2100 hours.
I spent nearly $1500 on my SP4805 3 years ago, the resolution is two steps above the 4805 for not even half the money. Yeah, I didn't exactly get WOWWED because this is my second PJ, but after a few hours I really started to notice how much nicer the picture quality is.

I thought the 4805 was a nice product for the money, but I would have been jumping around a few years ago to get this thing for sub $600. I am with you, I just can't justify spending so much money when you can 90% of the image quality of a $3000-5000 PJ for $600. To be honest if my 4805 would not have broken I would still be running it. With the picture quality of these things, you just run'em until they die because you are not going to gain that much.

It's going to interesting to see what they try and sell everyone once 1080p PJs are sub $1000. I just can't justify the price for limited improvement.

Yeah a review would be great, but the picture I got sealed the deal on performance for me..

I think it's 2,000 hours in normal mode and 3,000 hours in eco mode. I keep the room dark, so eco mode is bright enough for me (800 lumens).
Ok, I'm convinced. I ordered one this morning. Should be a big step up from my Infocus X1. Always the budget projector for me. It also looks like the lens position should work well with my panamorph lens. When it comes in I'll let you guys know. As for mounting, the bolt pattern looks very similar to the X1. The two back holes on the X1 are 150mm (5.9inches) apart and the front hole is centered at 151.4mm from the two back holes. If anyone can measure, I'd love to know if the Acer is the same.

Sounds like a deal... as soon as I get my HD70 back from Optoma, I will ship out the PH530 to a reviewer... either Art, Cavu or Kras. I just ask that you guys help me cover the shipping fees both to & fro.

How does that sound?
Wohoo! I ordered yesterday from TD/Shop.com and just got an email that my Projector already SHIPPED!

I'm giddy as a school girl right now.

BTW, anyone knows how this guy compares to the Sharp XR10XL? The sharp is XGA, 2000 Lumens, but only a 2000:1 contrast.
Specs don't look bad, there is a thread on it. It doesn't look like it has a HDMI, if you use HDMI.
