PS3 and AE700

Hello, yesterday I got a 60GB PS3 from Sonystyle.com. I wasn't looking to buy one now (didn't want to pay what people are asking for) but as soon I received and email saying that Sonystyle was selling PS3 on their original price, I went curious and ended up buying one. I won't be able to even see it, since I live outside US and I sent it to my sister's home in Wisconsin where I'm going on vacation by the end of January (yes, the time I have to wait is driving me crazy).

I want to take some advantage to prepare my home theater to receive the PS3. So:
At the moment I have a Harman Kardon AVR235 receiver. It doesn't have HDMI switching.
I have a HTPC with DVI output connected to my Panny AE700's HDMI input.

I'm really thinking about waiting a little more for buying a receiver with HDMI 1.3 switching, so right now I have 2 options (in my opinion):

1-Buy a DVI to HDMI adapter to use the same cable I have at the moment from the PC to the projector; or

2-Buy a HDMI switcher to connect both my PC and PS3 to the projector.

What would you recommend? I would like to have great video and sound quality with PS3.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I use my HTPC for storage of .wav files and my DVD collection. I use XLobby for my frontend playing these files and can honestly say I will probably sell the HTPC. The PS3 does almost everything that a HTPC will do but displays it in HD and puts out a way better sound.

So if you can pick up some extra cables and a switching unit for the HDMI hookup for cheap I would say go ahead. If your not impatient and don't mind swithcing a cable once and a while then wait it out. You might find that the PS3 replaces the HTPC like me.

As far as sound goes, just hook up the optical cable until you get a receiver capable of switching HDMI 1.3.

Thank you.
Would the Video quality be affected by using the same DVI to HDMI cable I already have but with a DVI to HDMI adapter in the DVI end?

Thanks again.

Also, is there any recommendations on HDMI 1.3 receivers or switches?
I read something about the Video Storm TMDS61 which is HDMI 1.3 compatible.
Any sugestions?

Thanks!

No. It will either work or it won't. Video quality should not be affected.

My 700 is connected as follows:
HTPC w/ Zoomplayer ffdshow transported over DVI to VGA
DVD player over YPbPr
PS3 at 1080i YCbCr select over HDMI.

You might consider VGA for your HTPC before purchasing a switcher.

I have a Monoprice 5x1 HDMI switch v1 between the PS3 and my AE700 and they work fine together w/o any "sparkles" on the screen. The switch (and the HDMI cables) from Monoprice is relatively cheap... may be you can order one and had it sent to your sister in Wisconsin

As for the HDMI 1.3 compatibility: the AE700 is not a HDMI 1.3 device so I can't test that but since the pin out of the HDMI connectors is the same betweem a v1.1 and a v1.3 devices it should work. I could be wrong.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I dont think you'll be able to watch blu-ray movies through the 700 using the ps3. The ps3 only plays back movies in 1080p only and will only downconvert to 480p. I used to own the 700 and it only accepts signals up to 1080i. I'm sure sony will correct it in a firmware update though.

Nevermind it does work in 1080i over hdmi, I just checked.

The PS3 will output BRD movies at any resolution (720p, 1080i, 1080p etc) it only limits the output on games for HDTV's that DONT support 720p (ie if the game is 720p the PS3 will downconvert it to 480p instead of upconverting it to 1080i like the Xbox 360). Also, I believe the PS3 will output 720p/1080i for BRD movies via component since the ICT hasn't gone into effect, plus it doesnt upconvert standard DVD's so I have my PS3 connected via component while my HD-A1 uses the HDMI input on my Panny.

p.s. I have an AE900 and the PS3 looks incredible on it & 720p/1080i

The PS3 will output BD movie to 1080i/p only but definitely NOT 720p.

Where did you read that? From what I understand it will do BRD @ 720p via HDMI or component.

Yes the ps3 wont do blu-ray at 720p, I know because I own one and I've tried.

sbquart, are you saying that I won't be able to watch BRD Movies in my AE700? Or I can use the PS3 with 1080i settings and my projector can take that? Would the video quality will be affected in any way?

Thanks

The AE700 will accept 1080i and downconvert it to 720P (its native resolution). I have 1080i going from both the Tosh HD-A1 and the PS3 to my AE700, and both look incredible.

Good to know. Thank you!

AE700 can accept 1080i input and the PS3 is capable to output Blu-ray movies and 1080p PS3 game @ 1080i (720p games will be output @ 720p only... a real issue for people who has 480p/1080i only TVs). The PS3 will output Blu-ray movies @ 1080i and the AE700 will scale the signal to 720p (assuming you enabled 1080i output on the PS3). There seems to be some PS3's in Japan and even US/Canada that could scale Blu-ray movies to 720p before any firmware upgrade right after the launch but that has been disabled/removed in subsequence upgrades.

I'm watching BR discs at 1080i from my PS3 to AE700U. I don't know what the other guy is talking about by saying it can only downconvert to 720p. If you run video via HDMI from the PS3 to the 700 and set max output to 1080i, that is what you get. Don't believe me? Put one on and hit menu on the projector remote, then view what resolution you're watching...1080i.

The native resolution of the AE700 is 720p, you cannot have any higher resolution because there are not enough vertical pixels. The projector can 'accept' a 1080i signal (it will not accept a 1080p signial) and rescale it to its native resolution of 720p. To me this is like taking a 540p signal and the projector upscaling to 720p, though maybe not that simplistic. That is why many of us want the PS3 to output 720p match the projectors native resolution, so there is less need for processing. If we all had 1080p projectors this becomes a moot point.
