What's up with the day/night PS3 home screen?

This is probably one of those things that have already been discussed at length right after launch, but I've only had mine up and running for a few days now. I suppose that based on the time zone you select, the home screen displays in a pure black at night time, but during the day it shows with up a harsh pumped-up brightness (based, I would guess, on the time zone that you selected)

Can this be disabled? I've tried the system settings but can't find a way, and I would like to have the black screen 24/7.

I have no idea what your talking about my PS3 appears to me to be the same color at all times of day maybe a little more explanation so we can look for what you are talking about. My dash right now is red and I know that changes with the months on the PSP so I assume it will be the same with the PS3.

He is right, in the main menu at night its black but during the day is sort of grey with some colors splashed in. I would like it black full time

The best way I can describe it is to imagine the main menu screen with the brightness control turned nearly all the way up. It's quite ugly and washed-out looking.

I'm watching this on an LCD, perhaps that makes a difference?

Mine used to be all red during the day and the red fading into black as it became night. It is now light blue/white colored. I didn't like the red at all. It's kind of cool, but I wish I could pick the color.

its different for different months and times of day... pretty cool actually.

So we have no control over this?, would we like if microsoft would choose our desktop and force us to use certain backrounds?, this sucks.

I have noticed the same thing, I prefer the black look at night but honestly I don't sit around stairing at the background, I'm typically playing a game or watching a movie.

octogon,
Use some common sence, if you dislike the product get rid of it, go get yourself an xbox or a wii and get out of here.

I would really like some customizability in the ps3 set up screen but lets keep it in perspective that this is truly a non issue for performance in what you bought the ps3 for (audio/video/games/movies).

Hasn't the PS3 been out, oh let's say, a month and a couple of weeks now? PATIENCE, stop picking the system apart, enjoy it, play the thing, or take it back... simple...

Image someone expecting you to show your full potential upon immediate acquisition? i.e. the first few months on a job.....

Give it time..... besides, like Max said, play your games and don't worry about the background so much....

the PSP was the same way. When it was launched, the screen colors vairied by month and were locked. In something like the 2nd or 3rd big update, Sony allowed users to pick their colors, or even use wallpaper photos.

Its coming on the PS3... give them time.

I ussually play in the early morning, its a bright pinkish color at like 7am, then turns a purplish, then a dull grey in the afternoon and slowly gets darker until its black at night.

In all honesty I really like it, control over it would be nice, but I wouldn't be too upset if I had to live with it.

Damn, I can't believe the things people complain about. Did you buy your PS3 just to sit there and look at the background or to play games/movies? I'm sure the big update coming in March will allow for customized backgrounds.

I hate those moon-faced icons for the user logins - they are laughing at me.

Merry Christmas to everyone!

The PSP had a similar effect - each month (on the first of the month) the system background would change to a new solid color. The PS3 took this further by changing it on a daily basis (for example, December was Red while January is white.. Instead of a harsh transition on Jan 01, the red will gradually turn pinkish then finally white. Additionally, it goes by the time of the day to adjust the brightness..

The PSP eventually received a firmware upgrade that let you select the color you wanted (and it would stay until you changed it) or you could use a JPEG as a custom background.

I'd assume its only a matter of time until the PS3 gets this.. but I really dont care for the light red/pink color it's currently in.

LOL! What people will waste time this days.

Sure the screen changes depending the time of day it is. During the time when SUN is up, the Screen will be Ornage/Pinkish and at night it will be Black/Gray.

IMO - its fine just the way it is, plus it neat! However, with next firmware update it should allow us to put our own backgrounds.

Check this...mine had ver1.10 and the screen would change with the time of the day. Once I upgraded to ver 1.31, it stopped changing colors. It is now of a constant grey-sh color.

You can actually change the log in icons.

Weird Jason. Not that anything is wrong with your PS3, but I believe it is supposed to change with day and nite from light to dark respectively.

I also was doing a double take after I reset my display setting to 1080i, and only got DTS Neo:6 PCM through optical and thought Motorstorm was in DD 5.1. Sure enough I just tried setting the display to 720p as highest and back to DD 5.1. Strange stuff.

Wait, I think upon setting it up initially, it gives an option for dashboard background to change with time, although I could be wrong.

Good Lord, people. Turn the damn thing off every now and then and go look at the real world. I honestly cannot believe this thread. If it was during a game like Rebel Strike on the gamecube and it affected play (training mode, much cooler at nite, btw...) sure, bitching makes sense but for the menu backdrop that's on, what, 3 seconds before you pick what you're going to do?!?!?!?!? oy..

I first saw someone's screenshot showing a red-ish color and I've spent quite a bit of time looking around the setting/manual to see where I can set it. no luck till i found this thread that it'll change itself accordingly. but mine, 1.32v, also only shows grey at day and black at night too. guess Sony had changed their mind....again.... but I do like the changing color every now and then tho. pretty neat and refreshing. just like you change the wallpaper every now and then.

Maybe we are just having a discussion and not bitching. Nah. That can't be possible on this forum, right?
