Payback: The Director's Cut HD DVD

This news is disturbing:

"The Director's Cut isn't some minor adjustment to sell DVDs - it is a complete overhaul. No Kris Kristofferson, no kidnapped son sub-plot, no boxing match and not any pulled punches. This is a mean sucker punch, gutter dirty, pissed off piece of pulp art! Mel is not "the likable superstar" in this film... The result is spectacular."

What? 10 minutes shorter? The Kris Kristofferson part is fantastic with the kidnapping of the son. Let down to me.

Payback was turned into a happy go lucky bad guy protagonist. This payback is is supposed to be a really gritty had to watch where we might not even want the protagonist to win. Which honestly with the dislike of Gibson going around I am really interested in both this cut and seeing how well it is received.

This is, finally, Brian Helgeland's film. He was thrown off the film by Gibson, who re-shot some of the film and edited himself.

How is this disturbing? This is great news....the movie studio watered it down and the director is finally getting to release his vision...

The entire third act is different. Angie Dickinson's voice is the head of the organization instead of Kris Kristofferson. She was in Point Blank which was the original movie based on the same novel. And she gives in to Porter's demands almost immediately. That's why the movie is so much shorter.

Dolby Digital Plus? BLEH!!!!

Why don't they put a Dolby Surround 2.0 track in there to make it even worse.
I'll post in this thread rather then the older thread referenced above, since that other thread is about both Payback and Babel - this thread is more focused. (And has the artwork.)

I never saw Payback - somehow it never caught my eye. Maybe this grittier version will be what I was looking for, so I think I'll order it.

So in reference to what metalsaber wrote: why would a studio encode in DD+ rather than Dolby TrueHD? DD+ will still sound pretty good, but it seems weird to not use a lossless encoding that is readily available...

WTG, Adam.

Those of you wanting TrueHD on the title obviously don't know Paramount very well. They rarely put that much effort into their releases, and when they do, it's on newer titles, not catalog ones.

I did? Ok, tell me how it ends.

As I stated last year, I saw the director's cut almost eight years ago now. It was a bad bad bad VHS copy of an AVID created tape of the director's cut. It is vastly superior to the theatrical version, which dramatically sanitized Gibson's character and through out the entire third act in favor of an extended second act and an all new (inferior) third act with a happy ending.

I am THRILLED to be able to get my hands on this puppy after years of thinking it would never, ever see the light of day.

I'll also be buying on BD. Sorry, but anything available on both formats will be purchased by me in BD because the writing is on the walls. Not including TrueHD titles, of course, like the upcoming MATRIX Trilogy.

I haven't yet seen the more "gritty" one. But if Mel dies I'll be supremely disappointed. I like my anit-heroes to survive. Ok, revisionist fiction in action but I'm watching the movie not readiing the book. If he survives then I probably can take the new cut...maybe.

I agree with HPforMe. I really enjoyed Kris Kristofferson's character, it is a shame he is cut. Still I am looking froward to this version, hopefully it will be as strong as the theatrical release.

I don't remember a whole lot of the movie-its been years since I've seen it, so I hope this new ending and such is good. Wasn't the kidnapped son vital to the movie? I thought it was his way of getting even with that crime boss.

I see the same writing, and when it's properly read it says "HD DVD all the way"

Guys, the shame is that the film was taken away from a talented director and completely altered against his wishes. It's studio politics at their worst.

Again, the theatrical version is really a completely different film vs the original unreleased director's cut. You can even see how it changes course past the mid-way point and gets all sweet and nice, with Gibson turning very soft and whooshy in regards to the love interest. Just gag me.

I'm counting down the days 'till I can see this sucker properly (bootleg VHS is not proper).
