PS3 hum and loop

Thread Starter
Hey all,

I just connected my PS3 before. When I use the composite or component cables I get a horrible humming noise that is accompanied with lines that keep running up the screen one after another. When I use HDMI this doesn't happen. I have tried this on 3 different televisions. I will be using the PS3 on two different televisions. One of which has HDMI and the other doesn't. So this is a pretty big problem. I was wondering if anyone knows how to fix this? Otherwise I will probably be returning it.

Thanks!

You have a grounding problem. Here is a link to a document that describes what is going on and how to fix it: http://www.cinemasource.com/articles/gnd_loop.pdf if you search for hum grounding problem a number of sites come up that describe the problem and how to fix it.

Good Luck!

The problem is you are using multipule devices with three prong power plugs and you sometimes end up with a ground loops. When I had this problem, it was the cable box. Try either unpluging the cable box from the tv or unscrewing the cable wire that comes out of your wall from the cable box and see if the problem goes away. I ended up having to install a capacitor like device on the cable wire before it reached the cable box. I would suggest you go to the audioholics website and search for ground loops, they show you a few options you can do.

So I'm having a slightly different problem with my PS3 (via component AND DVI) connections. TV is a sony 34XBR800 crt. I have the PS3 hooked up via the my old PS2 component connector cable. While sitting on the PS3 main menu, there is a vertical bar about an inch wide that scrolls HORIZONTALLY from the right side of the screen to the left every 3 or 4 seconds. There's a color-shift that accompanies each "cycle" of this thing that gives everything a greenish hue. (So, if I'm watching a blu-ray movie, every couple of seconds the actors faces will turn green and then back to their normal complexion). It's easiest to see this on the PS3's main menu, I can watch the bar travel across the screen repeatedly. I don't get this picture issue when the old PS2 is connected to the tv in this same manner.

So, I've read about ground loops and hums, and those appear to cause lines that travel vertically, this is a little different. So I figured it was time to step up and buy a HDMI cable (I then ordered the BlueJeans BJC Series-2 DVI/HDMI). Plugged that into the PS3 and onto the DVI jack of the Sony, figuring that would resolve the problem (HDMI shouldn't be susceptible to any type of interference, right?) No luck. Still have the thing scrolling right to left. NOTHING else is plugged into the tv, I unplugged the cable box, the audio patch cables, everything. Only the DVI cable from the PS3 remains. (The PS3 and the TV are both plugged into a Belkin surge protector).

So all I can think is that somehow there's a power issue with what is getting to the PS3. My next option would be to try some sort of AC line conditioning/filtering, perhaps? Anybody else have a similar problem?

Try a 3 prong to 2 prong adapter (also called a ground lift). You can find them at stores such as Radio Shack. I had the same problem with the scrolling bars and this was an easy fix.

ReidinPA, did you ever get this problem fixed and if so, how? I'm having the exact same problem. Thanks

This same method fixed the hum / buzz noise I was getting through the speakers when I ran my PS3 through HDMI.

After spending all the money on grounding/power conditioners and new cables (and not solving anything), I poked around on the CRT display forum and found hundreds of others with my same problem, turns out it's related to the Sony XBR set I have when it's fed a 1080i signal. Some other users have been able to resolve the problem themselves in the service menu by changing a setting or two, but those changes didn't make it go away on my particular set (there was mention of different circuit boards being put in these sets over time, some have the problem and some don't). So here's the link to one of the threads with the info you can try if this is also your situation:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=190083

(What I'm doing right now is just setting my PS3 to output 720p, I don't get the scrolling bars when that resolution is set. My comcast box still sends the tv a 1080i signal, but that goes through the component jacks and the scrolling bar is still there, but it's about 100 times fainter than through the DVI so I can live with that).

(And on a side note: After a long relationship with ONLY Sony XBR tv's, this problem put me over the edge, I just bought a Panasonic plasma).
