Sky+ box and Denon AVR-2807

Hi all,

My Pace Sky+ box is connected to my Denon AVR-2807 via optical. However, the Denon always shows "Dolby PLIIx Cine" instead of "Dolby Digital" when using the Sky box.

Any idea how to get Dolby Digital configured for the Sky+ box?

Thx

Even if the Sky box supports it you will have to find some programming that has it. Only high def tends to have it ever.

Quite a few of the non-HD movies also run in DD - the info for the program will indicate DD if being transmitted. Look out especially for first run blockbusters.

That means you have the PLIIx processing turned on. If you don't want it on, then turn it off and you'll get the straight Dolby Digital signal.

Dolby Digital is a type of content. Dolby Pro Logic is a type of processing applied to a content. They are not different types of the same thing.

I would assume the percentage of non-HD content to have DD 5.1 is still pretty small though right? Or at least on dish this still seems to be the case.

Very interesting - I don't know how to do this though. When I play a DVD, the receiver figures out what the signal has automatically it seems.

Do you know how to select DD on the AVR-2807, or better still to have it select DD or DPL automatically?

Thx!

I'm still not sure you're understanding. You receiver is likely playing Dolby Digital, but you have the Dolby Pro Logic processing turned on, so that's what's in the display. You can confirm this by looking how many input channels there are. If there's 5.1 and the display says DPLIIx, then this is the case. If there are only left and right channels being input and it says DPLIIx in the display, then it's probably just a PCM stereo signal. Either way, if you want the raw signal played without processing, then you have to turn the processing off. I'm not with my Denon right now so my memory is fuzzy, but you either hit the "Direct/Stereo" button (to Direct) or the "Standard" button on the remote until you've cycled out of DPLII and DTSNeo:6 processing into nothingness.

There is no Dolby Pro Logic on a DVD... it is not a content and the receiver can't "sense" it anywhere. It is something that your receiver applies to a signal (Dolby, DTS, Stereo, whatever) to produce sound in 7 speakers.

The receiver is sticky... if you used Dolby Pro Logic processing on your last 5.1 Dolby Digital signal, then it will use it again on the next one until you turn it off.

As a further aside... if you're going to use Pro Logic, hit the "surround parameter" button to access the tweaks. I personally prefer the 'music' mode to the 'cinema' mode that you're using as you can widen the front soundstage out across all three speakers very nicely.

Interesting soundlovr, that must be dependent somewhat on how you have your front speakers placed? On my system, I tend to hate the DPLIIx music as opposed to movie for most films and video. I have some front placement issues so my front soundstage is rediculously narrowed though. Just interesting more than anything.

Ya, well it's all about preference. What I like with the Music mode is that you can define how wide the front soundstage is. With Cinema, you're stuck with what's there. On my system, Cinema seems pretty narrow while I can make it very broad with Music.

Thanks for the additional information. I never tried altering the soundstange in music mode, I will have to give it a go.
