Sure it would help, but whether it is worth it depends on whether $300 is a lot of money to you or not.
Things like zoom, stretch, locking the receiver on 1080i, using HDMI or DVI output, and backlighting the display might be cheaper options. They are all work-arounds and compromises for the fact that you are stretching a small image into a fixed pixel display. My personal opinion is that you will eventually give up and stop watching SD programming unless 1) you REALLY want to watch a particular program, 2) you are bored out of your mind, or 3) you wife and kids force you to watch it.
I am a D* subscriber. I have had 3 HD receivers in the last 3 years. I got the last one, the H20 with MPEG4, 6 months ago. It was WAY better than the previous two for an SD image. It is almost acceptible by comparison to HD programming or digital OTA (but not quite). I would make sure you have the latest and greatest receiver from Dish at a minimum.
