Yes, I agree with bigger slow moving fans. I bought a 120mm fancy AC fan
that had great marketing for suckers like me. I had to build a foam muffler
on it to quiet it down and put it above the cabinet to make it so I can't
hear it. Much simpler to get a larger slow moving fan for quiet operation.
it would be simpler to buy an AC fan so as not to have to drive a DC fan via a converter.
Since I already bought it, and my wife was tired of me keeping the
component cabinet door open, I just went ahead and installed it with a
home-made foam muffler. Once the cabinet gets full with players and
a new STB, I might want to retrofit it for more airflow anyway.
One thing you can do is install a cheap thermal socket to power the fan.
I got one that powers the fan at 78F and turns it off at 70F, so at
least it's not going all the time. (if you want to spend more, there are
fancy socket thermostats you can get)
