Played on the PS3, for the most part. Went to green screen on me about four or five different times through the movie (came back every time, but still!). Ouch.

Those issues, along with noise on a few scenes, make this a very embarassing release for Lionsgate, IMO. Should have been the flagship, but instead it's awful. Very disappointing, even with getting it to play okay.

Still trying to decide about Blu-ray - so watched the SD version last night. Very impressive (up-converted) picture quality. Excellent sound. Of course no glitches what-so-ever. May have to wait on Blu-ray 6-7 months until all these compatibility (not to mention freezing) issues are resolved.

There's a grain of truth in the rumor that BD-J discs that tank the Sony/Pioneer are quietly being pulled from the release schedule until Pioneer and Esmertec can fix the BD-J stack (firmware upgrade).

And Talk, please don't choke on that crow.

Pretty sucky huh? I picked it up to check out BD Java and see if it could hold a candle to IME. Considering the damn disc won't even play, I guess not.

How do these things happen? This is the THIRD time a BD disc will not play on the Samsung. Is nobody testing these things at all?

(applause) GOOD ONE SONY! WAY TO MIND THE STORE!

I have the latest firmware, it doesn't play. I emailed Samsung, but I doubt they give a crap.

Luckily, Best Buy extends their return policy during the holidays.

This is available on HD DVD? (or are just assuming the the HD DVD version would be better if it actually existed)?

I watched it last night on my Sammy w/ latest firmware, no problems here.

How are people coming up with these drastically different numbers?

I have also seen the P/Q rated from 3.5 to 5.0...so should we guess around 4-4.5 then?

Has there been more than one firmware update? Maybe that is my problem, I assumed there had only been one. My Sammy has the dots instead of the hourglass, and it pillarboxes SD 4:3 material. Doesn't that mean I have the latest firmware? Yet The Descent does not work on my player.

I'm guessing that's why he very specifically said "TYPICAL HD DVD quality".

This is mainly a dark movie with very little lighted scenes except for the beginning and very end. If thats why they give it a bad rating, then thats pretty sad.

I bought the Sammy in early November, and the very first thing I did was install the latest firmware from their site... don't think it has been updated since. I also have the dots instead of the hourglass, but it does not pillar box SD 4:3 material (that kinda sucks, but I use the A1 to upconvert). I've had no problems watching Descent or Speed, other than a slower load than normal.

Any one that has the Pioneer Elite 1080p see Decent on it? This would be a great test for its supposedly amazing blacks. Ditto for the XBR's that don't have clouding.

I pre-ordered Descent on Amazon, and just today got a notification that the shipping estimated has been moved back to January 2.

Is this because Amazon ran out of stock (I pre-ordered on 12/20, a while ago), or is this because they are pulling the discs temporarily to correct these problems? As far as I know, 12/20 was one of the earliest days that Amazon re-enabled pre-ordering this title, so I can't imagine too many people were ahead of me in the queue. Something smells fishy.

Did anyone receive on from Amazon? I am going to scour the shelves today here to find one at retail if I can...

The dark scenes that some are reporting as video noise, IMO is film grain. I found the images to be sharp, colors nicely saturated and very good contrast compared to the SD version of the film.

Yeah, I got the same email. I ordered on 12/21/2006, so you are ahead of me.

Just flabberghasting as you claim to know this even though you don't have it.
I have this disc, but was requested to wait till after the holidays to screen it.

I'll give it a shot in my Samsung tonight. Samsung did have two updates that came in very short succession one after the other. If it does not play, I highly suggets attempting the upgrade again. There have been some oddities on the Samsung where doing the upgrade again solved the issues is all.

I also had it pre-ordered from Amazon, but when I saw it for only $5 more BB yesterday with a Christmas gift card in my pocket, I grabbed it there & cancelled my order since it didn't say "shipping soon".

The Samsung site shows that the firmware was last updated on 12/17/06.

Some players indicate the video bit rate while others indicate the total mux rate (with audio streams, interactivity, etc)?

possibly spoiler?

Just a note on the content of the movie rather than the picture. The beginning will be disturbing to her, but if she can make it through the first half then she should be just fine. Second half when you are actually seeing the 'enemy' isn't anywhere near as disturbing or scary in my opinion.

By the way it is definitely worth watching, even for someone who doesn't normally go for this kind of thing.

I've had my R2 SD release since this summer. She is mildly interested in seeing it because of the good word of mouth and since I've had a couple of groups of guys over to the house to watch the film this summer...she heard the good feedback from them.

Since I bought a copy of the BD, I thought it would be a good time to bend her arm to watch it. I agree that first half is really great at creating tension...I think she'll appreciate the film more than she thinks. We'll see.

It should have been titled

Buy.com just told me they shipped my copy today!!!

This is such a bummer. I have The Decent on its way from Netflix, to play in the new Pioneer BD player I should have by the end of the week. What a dissapointment BD has turned out to be. First my Panny player dies on me, after viewing a few rather mediocre titles, then the Pioneer I ordered is delayed, and delayed. Then, when it is finally coming, I find out it wont even play the first disc I have on the way. I may just scrap this whole Blu Ray idea altogether.

Free,

That is one of the many reasons that the Pioneer fell from grace in my eyes. It has such potential but combining the price, its slowness, and the lack of many features...it just wasn't worth it to me.
Well.. I had the Panny, and it didn't impress me. I could by the Sony, but it has the same problem as the Pioneer. I am not interested in buying a PS3, because I am not a gamer. What is left? The Samsung, which has gotten even worse reviews??
This flick will not play in my Sony or Philips player....but while getting my copy at Wally World.....I scored a PS3 60GB that some employee brought back after not being able to get rich on flea bay.

I will hook it up later tonight and give it a look.

I don't understand this thing about not playing the PS3 because people are not gamers. When you buy the PS3 it does not come alive and tie you down to your couch while it loads its self full of games and then shoves a remote in your hand threatening you to play it, thats your own choice and no one elses. Its one of the fastest "Disc" players I have ever had, be it DVD, HD-DVD, or blu ray, this sucker is quick and has no problem.
Wow! The greediness of the bluray association to allow people to buy $1000 players that cant even play the discs!
Incredible! And nowing that based on passed history their will be no firmware fixes for months so people are stuck with $1000 door stops!
Just cancelled my order for the pioneer!
