How's the general PQ with Starz and Cinemax HD?

As of now I only get HBO, HDNet Movies, Universal for my HD movies, but I have the option for more.

Is getting these worth it or is the PQ "meh" ?

Depending on how you receive the services - both are roughly the equivilant PQ of HBO-HD East....Starz-HD has a tad bit less bitrate but seldom does HBO, Cinemax or Starz use all they have.

The primary issue is the provider.

Cinemax looks as good as my other Comcast channels. But a lot of the types of movies I would want to watch (Batman Begins, King Kong) are not OAR. I haven't watched it since the Star Wars movies (at least those were OAR). I'm cancelling it once my $5/mo.-for-a-year-deal ends, if not sooner.

Puzzled whether "An Unfinished Life" on Starz yesterday was true 1080i or upconverted. Electronic guide and Starz's site said true HDTV, but all those outdoor scenes representing Wyoming mountain country seem fairly fuzzy for typical print quality these days. Hard to figure why the director/DOP would shoot them that way. -- John

I was not happy with the PQ of Starz and canceled it. Many movies were not HD but were widescreen. Fun with Dick and Jane was a recent movie on that was not HD. The HD movies didn't look that great to me but that could have been the fault of Dish Network.

I've seen that in the PPV and the Canadian Movie Channels as well - had to assume it was shot that way.

100% provider dependent.

I'm doing a $5 a month trial right now of all the movie channels, and so far my favorites are Showtime and Starz...due to original aspect ratio presentation. Showtime is pretty much 100% as far as I can tell ...and Starz does it sometimes...but at least it's been on movies I've wanted to watch...Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Pulp Fiction, and National Treasure to name a few ...however, they were showing Geisha and Kung Fu Hustle cropped ....so, I dunno what their rhyme or reason is. The PQ on the OAR movies looked great to me ...I compared Hitchhikers Guide to my DVD, and the Starz version blew it away.

Oh - people are saying PQ also depends on the provider ...I have Time Warner Cable

Those aren't even in HD.

What is hard to explain is that both are in HD on Starchoice. I don't know why starz doesn't get the hd version when it clearly is available. Doesn't make sense sometimes.
