1 - A bad copy of Christmas Vacation. Got a replacement from Amazon and it plays flawlessly.

Just watched a copy of Christmas Vacation from Netflix. It was scratched up quite a bit, but it worked without a single hiccup. I was actually surprised. This was the first HD DVD I've tried from Netflix.

Only Matador has refused to play correctly on my HD-XA1 out of ~60 HD DVDs played so far.

I have had 2 problems with my HD-A1 2.0 Update, HDMI Video, 5.1 Analog output with Marantz SR-4300 receiver

MI:III - around 7:31 into the movie the dialog went out of sync. Paused the movie and restarted and everything back to normal. Although i had a couple of jumpy moments for a very brief moment around the 101:00 mark in the film. 2nd full time watching it and only on the 2nd viewing did the problem occur

HD-A1

Several Audio and Video Issues every movie I watched on it. 1.4 firmware >returned player and waited for HD-A2

HD-A2

only problem is a single Audio dropout (usually in the first 30 minutes of the move) of every movie I've played. Absolutely no video issues during playback.
No issues on SD playback.

HD-DVD movies I have
(King Kong, Batman Begins, Serenity, Sahara, Cinderella Man) with more on the way from toshiba's 3 free movie deal.

I am using the Optical (toslink) for the audio, so I am assuming it's in the downmixing to DTS to my Yamaha receiver that is causing the dropout.. reports are that with HDMI there are no dropouts.

Although the Audio dropouts are a little annoying, I love this player and hope that it can be fixed with a firmware update.. the A2 is a keeper

I am sure Josh owns a betamax player......

Not to many problems...a couple of voice syncing issues and some problems here and there with sound droping out for a couple of seconds(go to menu and back corrects it).....I have also had a couple of instances where I would get an ERROR message when inserting a new disc.

other than that it has been pretty solid-not flawless but not bad
post #69 of 103
I voted for "2-4." To be exact, I've only had 2 issues, which were audio lip sync. They were easily fixed: I just paused the movie for 2 seconds and hit play.

Unit: HD-A1

A1 no playback problems, still running v1.4
post #71 of 103
One out of forty...the one may have been secondary to micro scratches.

Overall, very positive experience with my HD-DVD player.

I've never had any issues. The dozen or so people I personally know that own an HD DVD player haven't had any issues related to software or hardware. It must be noted that not everyone who owns a players comes to forums like this, so it's impossible to get an accurate tally of who has and has not experienced problems.

Any new technology will have glitches and bugs. I personally think HD DVD has performed very well since it's debut. It would be interesting to see how many people still have problems with standard DVD players and software. I'm sure it's still a healthy number there, too.

I'm not sure why people invest so much of their time and energy in trying to spread FUD and doubt. It's obvious that when given a choice, most people choose HD DVD, in my experiences. CNN just reported that HD DVD players were among the top "high-end gadgets" sold during the holiday season.

You know, I am always mystified when I see people post about glitches. Prior to updating the firmware to 2.0, there were a couple of skipping and audio sync problems. However, since the upgrade and a habit of spraying the surface with a blast of compressed air to remove particles left behind from the manufacturer, I have had zero problems. I was worried about the three Weinstein titles (Derailed, The Matador and Scary Movie 4) but they loaded just as well as any other disc and played flawlessly. Am I just lucky? How come I can't win the lottery instead.

I voted one. I have had some severely scratched discs (12 Monkeys (mine from Amazon slipped out of lock), 13th precinct, and Doom) that I had issues playing back but I expected it on those. The only true issue I had was with Superman Returns. It Locks at the point where the boss tells Clark to investigate the power outage and Ms. Lane to handle a superman report. Did this Twice on a A1 but I have it loaned out to a friend so I don't know if it does it on the X-Box add-on.

I voted 5-7, but keep in mind that I have most HD DVDs available.

I know that where I live the local Future Shop was consistently out of the XBox 360 HD DVD add-on, at least during the times I visited these past few weeks. It has been selling phenomenally well during the month of December, and with the buy two get one free offer this entire week movies have been selling extremely well too. The movies I wanted were out of stock. Sucks for me, but great for HD DVD.

One case where the disc kept playing but the counter and controls stopped working (or something like that), on my HD-A1.

Good news, indeed.

My replacement copy of Matador plays perfectly.

I guess they have no idea that the voters can be viewed.

Maybe he thought that this was the poll that wasn't public

I had one issue on my A1 with MI:III. Locked up several times---happened to be the first time I ever watched a high def movie with my wife and needless to say it was embarrasing trying to "justify" my purchases to her. Haven't tried it with the A2 yet.

I ended up taking out the disk and noticed a few tiny, tiny imperfections/smudges on the disk which were NOT from my handling (how the hell does a brand new sealed disk that has never been touched and that I have taken complete caution NOT to touch end up with smudges on it??!!!??)

After three or four cleanings the lockups ceased but it still skipped a bit during the "rescue the captured agent" scene.

I own 75 disks and have only viewed about 15-20% of those so far. Huge backlog of titles to watch..

Evidently, it requires human beings to put the discs in the cases because I have had at least half a dozen brand new discs with finger prints on them. The most recent was the Hulk. It had a big ole fat thumb print right in the middle of the playing surface. I am positive it was not mine since I just took the disc out of it's case to give a first inspection before putting it in the player. There is no excuse for this. The people putting these discs in the cases should either handle the discs correctly (by their edges) or wear powder-free latex gloves.

I had slight stuttering and lip synch issues on the Mission Impossible III Disc that was brand new.
I've had a few lockups and stuttering and my first total freeze last night (Nacho Libre). All of my issues occured with disks from Blockbuster Online and I have NEVER had a problem with a store bought HD DVD. My guess is these little disks are a little fragile.
