compared kingkong hd dvd and dvd, not impressed with hd dvd

my setup: Sony rear projection LCD (KF-60WE610), about 768p resolution
LG hd receiver/upconverting dvd player (LST-3510A) connected with
DVI cables
xbox 360 and hd dvd drive connected with component cables

the hd kk looked a little better than the regular kk dvd, i was playing both versions at the same time and flipping back and forth between the two

i was expecting something akin to when i first saw hdtv on my tv compared to sdtv
i am really disappointed, i know dvi is better than component and the LG is upconverting, but i think hd dvd should still look at least twice as good as dvd

do i need a tv that does 1080p for the hd dvd to look better or do i need a stand alone hd dvd player connected with DVI cables?

i think for people who are thinking about hd dvd, just skip it and stick to regular dvds, that is my 2 cents

Hmmm

Your findings are at odds with the vast majority of people. Also, you're not seeing HD DVD at its best on a 768 now, are you?

Your 2 cents is worth just that I'm afraid.

There is NO comparison between upscaled SD DVD's and HDDVD's. HDDVD's are clearly superior in PQ to their SD equivalent. It is really not even close with most disks. Some SD dvd's look better than others...none come close to the PQ of KK HD.


There must be something wrong with your current setup that degrades HD PQ. 768P is plenty of rez to see the difference.

Well, I can't tell the difference between 720P and 1080P below 50 or 60 inches, so that's hardly an issue IMO. There should be a massive difference with a good transfer though. I find your conclusion to be wrong as well , HD-DVD is definitely worth it.

maybe his blind but hasnt been to the doctors so he doesnt know it yet? would be a good excuse as to why he is not seeing a difference. or a broken tv? or bad settings?

without a doubt theirs a good improvement from the sd-dvd

Get a new system or get some glasses. It's unanimous. PQ is A1 stellar. Tier 0. And why start another thread? There is already a huge thread on KK. Next time do a search.

omg there is such a huge difference between sd upconverted and hd dvd you can't even come close!!

something must be wrong with the setup. i see a huge difference even on a 42" 1080p set.

I just have a 24" computer monitor that I watched King Kong in 1080p over VGA on (with 360). I had the DVD version playing simultaneously on my computer that I could switch to. I compared the end of the movie, when King Kong is on top of the Empire State Building, and the difference is massive. Pay particular attention to the city ib the background and the fur on King Kong. Even my roommate who thinks I've wasted a bunch of money on HD-DVD's had to admit that there was a huge difference.

I've got an xbox360 using component. I tried it on my old 42" plasma and newer 32" lcd. It was night and day between the DVD and the HD-DVD.

What the hell are you talking about? On my 42" RP LCD (720p) I see a HUGE difference in picture quality between King Kong SD vs. HD. I think you really need to get glasses or something.

I have blown up the HD-DVD of "Kong" as big as I could get it on my living room wall...about ten feet wide. I am using an Optoma HD-70 projector hooked up via HDMI. The picture is absolutely amazing, super sharp, with fantastic depth. I have not seen any other HD-DVD that is better, and it has to be about the best video picture I have ever seen, period. It really looks like a nice 35mm film print.

Maybe he does need glasses, I went to the eye doctor for the first time since I was a little kid this year and he said I should not be driving. I got my glasses and it was like seeing HD for the first time all over again. I didn't even know I was blind as a bat,even real life looked more HD.

I guess the sony's made for Blu-Ray... get a Toshiba display and you'll notice the difference right away (just kidding of course, but if you don't see a lot of difference on this disc there MUST be a problem with your display)

Try the VGA cables for the 360 and make sure to fiddle to get the brightness settings right. You should see a major difference between DVDs and HD-DVDs.

No comparison at all between SD/HD on my AE900 even over component, not even close. The Kong HD DVD is the best pic I've ever seen anywhere, incredible.

If that is the case, then you must think that Blu-Ray looks even worse than a standard DVD

It's weird how you ask for help and question whether you have the right setup, but then go on to dismiss HD-DVD and advise people not to buy it.

I think the people who usually post these threads are either having buyer's remorse or something is seriously wrong with their eyeballs.

My TV is 720p native with 1080i support and it's like night and day, especially with King Kong. My upscaled DVD player connected with HDMI was nowhere near this quality.

I would say the HD-DVD version of King Kong looks better then the SD-DVD versions. It is actually one of the few HD-DVD's I've kept. I would put King Kong up there with Kingdom of Heaven and Hulk, but not quite in the same boat as Corpse Bride or Transporter 2, very good PQ though.

Is the switch on the back of the Xbox cable set to HDTV? - there is a SD setting, which means it'll downconvert everything you're watching to standard def.... I'd be willing to bet it's some Xbox setting that is fing you up - because the difference is staggering.

I have a 46 inch Hdtv, Xbox 360 add on and component cables(I still like the best),
1080I and I thought KK was off the charts awesome. At Christmas I had my wifes family over and for the heck of it I had this playing just to see reactions.
Everyone who looked at the screen stopped what they were doing to remark how awesome it looks. Adjust the color to higher on your Tv, move sharp up and contrast up some, and I like the higher temperature setting.
I played around with it for awhile and am really happy with the results.
Some of these movies are a little lackluster, however King Kong is stunning.

I bet its the fact that the movie is just downright crappy, no matter how good the picture Quality is, and unconsciously this is affecting the way he also thinks about the picture quality = crappy, even though its really good. I am not going to buy this movie, nor the hulk, because no matter how good they make the film look, it doesn't make a better plot. I must say though, if its one of your favorite movies, one with a plot that you love, then it does make the film extraordinarily better. Bourne supremecy and Underworld evolution in HD were incredible experiences .
