Mitsubishi HC5000 and videogaming

I own a Mistubishi HC3000 720p DLP and I plan to upgrade to a Mitsubishi HC5000 1080p LCD.
I use my projector for movies but also for gaming (xbox360 and PC).
I have some question especially for those who own a HC5000 and play videogames with it:

1) Most important: I read on a local magazine that there are some issues during pannings. This could be a serious problem in videogaming (eg: some blurring or other artifacts). Is that true? My HC3000 has no problems at all with pannings.

2) is autoiris an issue? I mean, often in videogames there are fast changes from bright scenes and dimm scenes in a matter of a second or less. Is the autoiris too much noticeable during these scenes? Is it advisable to turn it off?

3) How good is native contrast ratio without autoiris? Or, most importantly, is it better than HC3000 or i should keep my projector?

Thanks for your help.

Iris effect is not so noticeable even on movies. You must be looking for it.

I use the HC5000 with Half Life 2 at 1920x1080 an it's simply amazing. I do not perceive any Iris effect (My setting is DI 3).

On the 360 too, with Oblivion, I do not perceive any Iris effect. Even when looking at the sun. GoW is amazing, but I had to set High Brightness and push the color slider on the Mitsu to see it in its full glory.

I perceived some Iris effect in Kameo once, but not since.

Wii and PS2 games upscaled are amazing, texture still blurry but the silhouettes are not jagged at all.

I've got no problem with panning.

I played GOW on XBox 360 on the HC5000 at 1080p

And of course, I have tried NFS Carbon/RR7 on the HC5000.

To be honest, I never noticed the DI working in games. Maybe cos I am too engrossed. I do see the DI working in some of the shows I do watch tho. A lot. Even on DI1 or DI3. Like Enterprise DVD. But it's stopped bugging me.

As for black level... well I think DLP is gonna be better for native black level and contrast (ie w/o DI). But personally feel the extra resolution is worth it when watching BR/HD movies and playing native 1080p games.

I moved up from an AE700 LCD so this was a big step up for me on all counts.

To answer your question, native CR on the 5000 (or any D6 panel projector for that matter) is horrible IMO. Do a search and you can find the actual numbers, which are dissapointing.

IL2 Sturmovik OpenGL Nvidia 7900GTX VGA to HC5000. The black bars a must, 1024x768 native rez.

Love it, love it so much that i sometimes stay in a game even when all other combatants left, just marveling at the scenery.

The magnifier(binoculars that WW2 pilots had in cockpits) does now show every detail, i can see bogeys waaay ahead. I come from the PLV-Z3. Latency also much improved.

Thanks for all the answers. I understand that all my worries about auto iris and screen panning are a non-issue.
The last doubt I still have is about contrast, as DonnerHead pointed out.
In the end, I would like to know if native contrast is at least as good as my Mitsu HC3000 (3000:1).
If that's so, I would consider buying an HC5000 a full upgrade with no downgrades and I'll buy it as soon as I can.
If native contrast level is lower than my HC3000, I think I'll keep my old projector.
Thanks in advance.

Native contrast with the DI disabled would not be as good as the HC3000. But then, as you read, the dynamic contrast is at least as good and the iris is not very noticeable in games, so you would probably run games with the iris set to one of its dynamic modes. In this case, you should find the contrast more than acceptable.

One thing I have not read in any review is what the native contrast is with the iris fully closed but non-dynamic (is this possible?). Most of the reviews just say iris disabled. It must be at some %age of open / close when disabled, but reviews dont say which. HC5000 owners, is this controllable when the DI is disabled? i.e. can it be operated like a manual iris?

Check out what Jason got with the DI turned off on the 5000 for CR. May want to keep the 3000 for a while.

Edit: Sorry. Meant to quote GenJuro.
