Hello ALL!
Well I just changed rooms in my basement and the size is 14' x 19'.
I want small speakers that are small cube speakers. I don't want anything big!
I will be getting the pioneer receiver vsx 1016tkvk.
I will also be picking up my new plasma panny. So the question is this what is or are the best speakers for my new set up?
I don't know anything about any of this so I am relying on you guys to PLEASE help me out.
I will be watching dvd movies and tv also my kids will be playing xbox as well.
again size is very important to me!
I have learned alot so far from everyone here about not getting the BOSE speakers so I need others instead. I am very confused with all the different speakers out there.
Thanks to all.

While some very small speakers are better than others (eg Athena Micra, Def Tech Cinema, Orbs), the laws of physics dictate that none of them sound as good as larger speakers. If sound quality is at all important to you, at least consider bookshelf speakers.

Yeah, not getting a BOSE AM-10 setup but instead getting a Klipsch Cinema 6 setup doesnt gain you anything but some $$ savings. I know a dealer that sells both and they sound very similar. The Cinema 8 or Cinema 10 were much better systems he had on display.

Its not about getting or not getting a particular brand, but something you will enjoy and work for your space.

Listen to some systems first. Bookshelf speakers would be the way to go, but if you want something small I would say listen to Athena Point 5, NHT Classic Zero, Klipsch Cinema 8, Energy Act 6 instead of bose cubes.

Check out the M&K K-5's - about as small as you can get for a "real" speaker, easy to wall mount, reasonably priced, and excellent sound - just make sure you have a decent sub to fill out the bottom.

I'll second the NHT classic series, except I would go w/ the threes, there not that big, bookshelf size, and deliver some quality.

If staying small, Gallos would be my personal choice, pretty detailed, and wife friendly.

Both could use a sub though. And a room that size will probably do best w/something no smaller than a 10" woofer.

Guys!!!
Your right! I went to "The Little Guys" store and listened to some smaller book shelf speakers and boy oh boy that is the way to go!!!
So I want to pull the trigger and get going on this stuff but dont want to jump too fast!
Again sorry for not knowing anything but Just not speaker savvy.
My new question.
Knowing my room size 19' x 15' and keeping the cash under $1600 what speakers would you go with ? Note : I too want to keep the bookshelf size down as well.
will I need stands? or anything else?
Thanks Again

Hey Steve, I'm from your neck of the woods. I live about 25 min. from The Little Guys. I can't help you much with speakers, but I can give you a couple of sub-options. Look at SVS and HSU. These are subs that you will not be able to audition(internet or phone in) unless you know someone with one. I have an SVS PCi 20-39 paired with my Paradigm Studio 60 v2. and Studio CC and it will shake the house. The only downfall is that it's so big. They also make box subs too.

Happy hunting,

Keith

AV123 X-Series. Don't let the low price fool you. For extra pop, given your stated budget, you can easily afford to drop the X-sub and instead add in the more robust MFW-15 subwoofer. Nothing wrong with the X-sub if you decide to stay smaller and pocket the $$.

"laws of physics"? Then tell us, Pulliam, why well-designed headphones can be used as reference in sound studios (along with studio monitor speakers?)

muskiesteve - your best shot is to do some in-home demo of budget speakers, bookshelf or otherwise. You will have to decide what compromises to take here.

How old are the kids? If they are young, I would stay away from bookshelf speakers because they can get knocked over and really damaged. If they are teenagers, I would get speakers and sub that handle being CRANKED

Sorry Steve, I didn't mean to come of as being short with you. Personally I woud suggest you rethink the small cube requirement for the sake of sound quality, if not, the Orb system has many fans here and would be probably as good or better than anything.

A less expensive option http://www.hsustore.com/vt12.html could be mated with a larger Hsu subwoofer for better movie sound effects.

Another interesting lifestyle option would be: http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/it...ures/544999293

A little larger yet still wall mountable: http://www.svsound.com/products-sys-sbs_black.cfm is a true two way system with very good reviews.

The NHT system I referenced earlier is largest of the bunch but is also wall mountable.

The Onix X-ls system is a solid choice but would require to be placed away from the walls.

With some work on your part you should be able to audition the NHTs and the KEFs in your area, the rest are internet direct and you would either find an owner locally who would allow you listen, or order a set and take advantage of the trial period. The problem with the trial period is that you won't be able to compare directly with other options (unless you order several sets at once and are willing to incur freight costs). Often it is not possibe to directly compare different speakers, to help me evaluate I like to use this system: http://www.linkwitzlab.com/Loudspeaker%20evaluation.htm

In the end you have to satisfy your tastes, restrictions, and budget, we can only point out options. Good luck.

Because they only have to move a small amount of air, not all the air in the room, obviously.
