Barco 508, 720p via component?

Thread Starter
I recently purchased a Barco 508.

Looking at upgrading to HDDVD in the near future and would like confirmation if it will accept 720p via component?
Sorry, it won't. The 508 is a video-only set and so will only accept 480i/576i.

Thanks, what about via the RGBHV?

That makes no difference, sorry! The only plus that the 508 has above the various Sony 10XX models (apart from the 1031 and later 1030's) is that it has a digital chassis and Liquid Coupled lenses. A good performer, but no progressive scan possible.

Bum.

Is the 508 significantly different from the 500 series? As Curt Palme has the Barco Data 500 listed as?

Barco Data 500 7" 600 1024x768 720p, 1080i 50

I think the 508 was liquid cooled, not LC. I used to have one, good unit but unfortunately only for video as mentioned. Although with anamorphic squeeze at 16:9, the res is quite high and scan lines aren't really visible.

Had one also, video only as mentioned. Nothing to do about that.

Before I forget... The 508 was made in India and was definitely a LC machine, as I know someone who had this machine and I have the photos of the LC assembly to prove it.

Does it share anything in common with the 708 series? Of course I'm thinking of a potential hybrid LC 708.

Funny, I was thinking exactly the same when I had the chance to buy one. But no, I don't think it shares parts with the 70X series. I'll attach some photos.

Definately a completely different design, thanks for the photos.
Those lenses might not be so good for HD anyway. Is that a single ajustment knob for focus, not seperate focus for center and edge?

I love the performance of my 708s with p16 tubes especially with how small it is, but I guess it's not really worth putting a lot of time in modding it anyway. I need to replace the noisy fans and fix a noise problem in the image and that'll be good enough. The fans in this seem louder than an 808 or 1208. Maybe it's just because it's table mounted right next to me though.

FYI: Peter (Spotmatic) send me the specs on the BV508 so I've added it to the Barco specs page on Curt's site. Thanks Peter!

Thanks! But we've already got the brochure, install manual, and install manual here: http://www.curtpalme.com/Barco701_Downloads.shtm

(This PJ shares more in common with the 7xx series than the 500/800 series).
