The Pioneer DVR-543HS and Divx playback

Hello!

I've just bought a Pioneer DVR-543HS and am having some trouble playing Divx files. The files show up, and I can select them to play, but the resulting picture flicks up-down like film in a projector. The audio is normal, but the screen is totally unwatchable. This happens on a couple of different DVD brands. The manual is unhelpful in this regard.

Can anyone more knowledgeable tell me what the problem is? One disc of avi files plays perfectly and yet I cannot think why--my method of burning them was identical.

Thanks!

Burn them to a CD!

Do you mean as opposed to a DVD?

Yes. Pg 12 of the manual: "This recorder can play DivX video files burned on CD-R/-RW/-ROM discs."

The manual never mentions DivX and DVD together, always CD.

And yet I have a DVD of 7 or so video files and it played them perfectly.

You're right. You should not try the files on a CD.

where can you buy this model at?

I bought it at Best Buy.

The machine is obviously capable of playing video files burnt to a DVD. I am merely wondering why some play and some don't.

For anyone interested in DivX on DVDs rather than CDs (the media spec'd in the Pio 54x/64x manual), here is a post from a U.K. thread:

"The pioneer definatley does divx on dvd...but it must be written as a data disc on -r or-rw.

Pioneer just don't advertise it...as there are many ways to put divx on dvd, different programs auther etc.

Tried and tested on 540."

Ah, so, just to be clear: the DVD should be -r or -rw, and not the + varieties? (Of course, I've just purchased 100 DVD+R -- that figures).

And yet...the disc of files that does work is also a DVD+R. I'm beginning to wonder if the problem is with the actual encoding of the video file (i.e., it is an avi, but not a divx).

In any event, thanks for your input.

I copied an avi file (as data) from my pc to a DVD-rw and it played fine in the pio 543

Well, it seems mine is being temperamental with certain files. I guess I'll have to deal with it!

Similar discussion stream found at on forum on divx com, topic "Pioneer DVR 640HS"

I have seen exactly the same problem as blakean99, but only with certain files. Checking with GSpot revealed that it was only the ones encoded with DivX 5 or later; XviD and earlier DivX seem to work fine. All of my files work fine on my desktop, so the files are good. However, I checked on my notebook that I hadn't updated the codecs on in a while, and sure enough - the same ones that wouldn't work in the Pioneer player had troubles on the PC. Then I updated the codecs and they worked fine again.

So... the problem seems to be the up to date status of the video codecs embedded in the DVD player/recorder. Though the update history doesn't specifically mention it, my next step is to flash the firmware according to the instructions on the pioneer site

Any other hints or experiences from people would be appreciated.

I have the same issue with certain VOB files that I have downloaded and written to DVD-R. Where can I find the latest firmware for the 543h-s? I do not see it on the pioneer website? Would the firmware be the same as the 540h-s and the 640h-s since the manual is for all 3 models?

The best site that might have up-to-date FW for the 543 is

http://pioneerfaq.info

Look carefully thru that site and make sure you read everything to make sure you're reading about your specific model...the site is great but world-wide and covers lots of non-U.S. stuff as well.

This is the site that posted the FW update for the 640 that fixed the recorded title-transfer problem.

Thanks wabjxo,
I have updated to v6.20 FW and it does not correct the flickering video. Thanks anyway!
shawkir,

I know this couldn't be your source of flickering, but I've gotta see if at all possible for you too.

I had flicker in opening titles when playing a commercial movie ("Michael") in one of my DVDRs. I tracked down the source of the flicker to an unbelieveable place...my Still Frame setting.

I had it on Frame, which can cause flicker in titles (maybe other things added over video), and when I changed that to AUTO, flicker went away!

I am not sure where to find that setting? do you happen to have the same unit?
found it, was already set to auto

Must have been my TV, I bought a 52" LCD and all works great!

I had the same problem on my 640...certain Divx files just wouldn't play....

I discovered, after many frustrating hours/days, that all the files that would not play were reported as 25.0 fps by G-spot. All others play fine for me...
