PS3 - Cant get 1080P on MY 1080P TV

So forgive me for my ignorance, but I purchased the Mitsubishi WD-52628 a few months back and just picked up a PS3 which is supposed to output 1080P.

Much to my dismay even after doing the updates on the machine I couldn't get my TV to receive that signal. In fact the only available signals using the HDMI input I can get is 1080i and 480i.

Anyone else having this problem and what is the fix? If the model says 1080P and can't do it that seems a bit misleading... (Not a TV guru)

Thanks for any help

I beleive your TV is only capable of receiving a maximum input of 1080i on your HDMI input. Then the TV deinterlaces the signal internally to 1080p. So set your PS3 to 1080i and it will apear as 1080p on your screen. I know of several Mitsubishi's which do this same thing.

Since the TV still displays a 1080p image, they are allowed to advertise/market the TV as 1080p. This has been a somewhat controversial situation in the TV market for some time now.

This model cannot accpet 1080p inputs. So, that is the problem.

Well...it is definitely not the PS3's fault your set is not displaying 1080p.

Bottom line: the Mitsubishi will not accept 1080p sources via component or HDMI, and in any case provides no direct route for any1080p source directly to the display. This limitation is true for most of the 1080p sets presently on the market.

This is why I waited for sets which would accept 1080p.

Thanks for the help.

I feel kind of robbed. Fry's was telling me this is the latest and greatest 1080P TV when I purchased it back in August. The picture looks great, but yeah they shouldn't be saying this is a 1080P TV if it's truely not.

Technically it is and will display 1080p...it just does not accept 1080p from certain sources. Always be in the know when making a purchase such as this.....never rely on the sales people at any given store.

This was the case with just about all of the first generation 1080p sets with the exception of the HP's, and I think the Samsungs via VGA. Mitsubishi, Toshiba, JVC, and even Sony's SXRD had this problem. In the case of Blu-Ray and HD DVD though, it's not really a problem. It should display properly on a 1080p set even if the signal is sent as 1080i.

Yes - for 1080/24p BluRay and HD-DVD replay a 1080/60i interconnection will provide identical quality to a 1080/60p connection AS LONG AS THE DISPLAY HAS A DECENT 3:2 DE-INTERLACER. This is because there is no picture loss when a 1080/24p is carried as a 1080/60i signal - there is no benefit to carrying it as 1080/60p apart from removing the need for a de-interlacer in the display.

The real issue for PS3 owners is in gaming - as games with 1080/60p output running at 60fps CANNOT be connected losslessly via 1080/60i connections as there will be resolution loss on moving objects via 60i compared to 60p.

With movies you shouldn't be losing too much with 1080i - although with some discs the TV's 3-2 pulldown may not be perfect and you may notice momentary softness as it shows a scaled field instead of a frame.

With 1080p PS3 (or 360 / PC) games though, there is 60fps information that cannot be delivered to your TV. I don't know if any of the existing games are 1080p though. In 1080i only 1/2 that information gets through. Movies don't lose that information because they are only 24fps.

I know how you feel. I have an acer AT-3705 LCD that is supposed to accept 1080P, bought it before reading the fine print. This model does 1080P over component & VGA but not HDMI. Other than that, still a great bargain.

Supposedly, even the new Toshiba 1080p RPTV's can't accept 1080p signals. Truly dumb.

Your set will accept a 1080p singal via the HDMI 2 input. You have to set that input to PC mode in order for it to work. You also will have limited picture adjustments as well in PC mode.

Did anyone hear about the Mitsubishi Upgrade?

I called them and they ADMITED the problem with my tv. I have a Mitsubishi 62627. They said I needed an upgrade in order to get 1080p.

Apparently they screwed up with the original shipments of the tvs.. And even though the tv has 1080p according to them, the feature was LOCK and it had to be unlocked due through an ugrade.

I received the upgrade and installed it. I waiting to get a Blue Ray and see if the tv does shoot 1080p now like they said..

Anyone heard of this?

Good info that seems to go unnoticed.

The set will also display a message saying its an unsupported resolution but it goes away after 30 seconds or you can hit the sub/cancel button on the remote to remove it.
