Question about Samsung Blu-ray BDP-1000

Hello Everyone and Good Morning,

Im Thinking about getting the Samsung Blu-ray BDP-1000.

However my question is, what i need to do is run the HDMI to my Sony Receiver with HDMI Passthrough and then back out to my TV. This will of coruse pass my audio to my TV also which i dont want. Then what i will do is run an optical audio cable to the receiver to get surround sound and then disable the volume on my tv.

Question will this work?

If so what setting do i need to set if any to make it work the best?

Thank you!!

The set up you described is fine. Unless you are using the receiver as a switcher ....meaing multiple HDMI source components...no need to run the video through the receiver...just directly to the TV. And yes to the other two quesitons, run an optical cable from the Sammy to the receiver and turn the TV's volume to zero.

Well i want to run the HDMI through the receiver so i have my 2nd HDMI Receiver port open for future use, and then run the optical cable...with that setup what setitngs do i have to set inside the Samsung to make this work the best?

Also How does the player play DVD-R Discs from Standard Def TV Shows recorded from TV??

My samsung connects to the plasma through a HDMI switch to one of the HDMI inputs on my AVR that switches only and eventually connects to my TV via DVI.

The audio is going through coax digital (optical should work too). Your AVR just has to have the ability to assign a setting to select audio from a coax input and video from HDMI (which is easy if the AVR does not handle audio in the HDMI).

yup my AVR can do that, but on the Samsung Blu Ray It self, is there a special setting i need to set to make this workl?

Thanks for your responce.

Why don't you let the audio run through the HDMI cable to the receiver and ditch the coax/optical connection?

Maybe they want to use the HDMI dedicated for uncompressed LPCM and Video and use the opt for legacy DD/DTS.

If there was a need to hear the Dolby or DTS audio versus the PCM, it could be selected in the disc's menu and still run through the HDMI cable.

If the receiver switches HDMI but does not decode audio from it (which would be a serious failing, in my opinion, since it kills half or more of the reason to have HDMI in a receiver), then simply connect the multi analog or S/PDIF output(s) from the Samsung to matching inputs on the receiver. If you want audio from the TV connected to the receiver (such as for the TV's built-in tuner), then treat that separately, perhaps to a "TV audio" input on the receiver if it has one.
