Upconverting over HDMI or Component?

Thread Starter
I am debating over getting an Oppo 970 or something like a Samsung HD860.

The oppo upconverts over the component.. while I think the Samsung does over HDMI.

I preferably would rather use my HDMI slot (my component inputs are filling up)..

Will the HDMI up-conversion be superior over the component? Or not really...

I have a Samsung TX-R3079WH Slim-Fit tv.

Both the Oppo and Samsung will upscale over HDMI, which should (theoretically) give better PQ than over component by eliminating an unecessary digital-to-analog-to-digital double conversion (HDMI allows a pure digital path).

according to Oppo it only does 480i over HDMI...

The Oppo 971, 970, and 981 all upscale on the digital output (DVI or HDMI). The 970 will also do 480i via HDMI which was something the 971 did not do via DVI (and I'm not sure about the 981).

Oppo 981, 480i over HDMI: no. Only the 970 does that.

And, as the others have said, the 970 also does 480p, 720p, and 1080i over HDMI.

Out of the box, component is limited to 480i/480p when playing copy-protected disks. There is unsupported firmware which removes that restriction. (This is not a technical problem, but rather a matter of licensing agreements).

I looked everywhere on here but cannot find out where to get the hacked or unofficial firmware change that will allow upconvert of everything on component. Please direct me directly. Thank you. --Tom in Tucson

The last player to upconvert over component was the zenith dvb318 and you have to find the older firmware somewhere on the internet.

Despite the theoretical reasoning, some players do clearly better upscaling over component than HDMI or DVI; i.e Zenith DVB318. Also despite theoretical expectations, some players do better upsampling to 1080i than to 720p even with displays that are 720p native. Conversely, some players are reported to do a lot better over the all digital path: Bravo D1.Go figure.
At the end, only when we try with a specific combination of source/display components we can be in a position to really compare which way is better for us.

How so? Both sets of outputs are driven from the same scaler inside the player.

It's an old player. There are better ones available, such as the Oppos.

The Oppo 970 is much better player than the Samsung HD860 (which has some issues & problems). The Oppo support is second to none too.

I just recieved my Oppo DV-981HD.
Haven't tried it out yet (still in box - just like my new Vizio 47" 1080p), so I'm going from other users.

It seems just what you want, though.
It ONLY uses HDMI and up-converts DVD's to 1080P (not 1080i, 1080p)!
Works on Divx and Xvid, too.

Order direct from Oppo for $225.

Luck!
