The salesman is not correct. No need to upgrade for this. Only significant advantage to accepting a 1080p signal is if you plan to use an external video processor that upscales everything to 1080p and then drive the display at its native resolution in order to avoid the display's processing altogether.
BTW you have a very good display. I hope you are enjoying its excellent picture. The only thing I would upgrade for from there is a plasma for PQ or the 70" SXRD for size.
