In a year or two no one will ask this question but just for the few people out here who own Panasonic Plasmas and would like their DVDs to look their best without MACROBLOCKING and without having to pay a fortune--what are the top 5 for less than $500?

Probably the Toshiba HD-A1/A2 and Oppo 970.

The Sony 3100ES is a good player too, but a little too much EE for my taste.

But, the 970 is definitely the best bang for the buck.

Panasonic S52
Sony NS75
Sony NC85
Denon 1730
Yamaha S659
Pioneer 490
to name but a few.

Wow--I didn't know there were this many. Right now I don't know whether to go with a Toshiba or Blue-Ray and hope their upconverting is good or just get the Oppo 970 and wait for universal HD players. I'm inclined to do the latter.

Can any of the other sub $500 NON MACROBLOCKING upconverting DVD players come close to The Oppo 970 in Picture quality or does Oppo simply RULE?

OPPO is pretty much a fan favorite. They have good technical support, frequent updates, and care about the loyalty of their customers. If you want something that is cheap to purchase but is great in performance and support, I highly recommend OPPO.

Considering you can get the Tosh A2 for $400, I'd say it's the way to go rather than the Oppo, with your <$500 budget.

I took the oppo accolates on this website with a slight grain of salt, but now that I have purchased one and have seen it first hand, the PQ is far better than anything I expected. It borders on stunning when you pop in your standard def discs. I am now a convert. Dollar for dollar it the best way to go, especially if you have an extensive DVD collection.

Get the Toshiba and the Oppo. Together they are just a little over $500.

If you get the Tosh, why would you need the Oppo?

Word.

But with all these HDMI devices a good HDMI switcher quickly becomes a necessity.

I just recently bought a 50PX60U and I'm worried that the macroblocking issue will get me mad everytime I see a movie. On the other hand OPPO 971 passed more tests than the 970 in audioholics. With the 970 it says that if you have a "larger sized screen" there might be a jaggies issue since it failed this test. I'm wondering what exactly is larger sized?
I have a 50 inch and viewing more or less 8 to 10 feet away. How bad is the 971 macroblocking in a panny's plasma. I tried searching the panny's sticky but search didn't yield returns.

Call or e-mail Oppo with specific questions. They have A+++ customer support. They will get back to you quickly with an informed response/answer.
