Funny Blu-ray/PS3 Story

Thread Starter
My wife and I were at the Mall earlier today and I wondered over to the GameStop which was near by. I went over to pick-up one of the new PS3/Blu-ray remotes, which works great by the way.

I noticed a guy in the store window placing a sign which read, "PS3 Now In-Stock." I asked how many they had on hand and he said they just got 35 of the 60GB and none of the 20GB.

After I left the store, my Wife and I wondered over to the food court and had some quick lunch, maybe 20 minutes or so. After that we decided to leave the Mall.

On the way out, we passed by the GameStop and sure enough, all 35 of the PS3's had sold out!! In a total of 30 minutes they sold 35 of them. I knew the PS3 was selling well, but I didn't realize there was still this type of demand for it.

I guess that's why it's sold out and people are actively hunting for places that have them in stock. If it's a busy Mall, it's not surprising that there were 30 people there who may have been looking for a PS3 milling around

Is this the funny Blu-Ray story thread?

If so, I have one from today. I was at a local large high end "appliance" store today. I had wandered over to the "Sony" TV area, where a decent sized crowd was gathered. When I nudged my way up front, it was clear what was going on...they had Xmen3: Last Stand BD playing on the 70" SXRD XBR2 via the Sony BD player. On the other nearby Sony TVs, 60" SXRD XBR2, etc they had an HD feed playing one of Saving Private Ryan, Kill Bill Vol. 2, or LOTR.

So what was so funny about it? Well, as I was standing there, a little old lady tapped me on the shoulder and said, ""How come this one looks so much better?" I told her, "That's because the source is Blu-Ray disc and that's also a really exceptional rear projection TV there." She asked me what a rear-projection TV was vs. LCD, and I told her to go ask the salesman for help since I didn't want to get into a long confusing tech conversation with an old lady.

I just thought it was so darn funny that a 70+ year old lady was checking out the HDTVs. Many people heard me say "Blu-Ray Disc", and then it clicked for many of the guys there. They didn't realize they were watching a disc, but they were just all mesmerized by the picture. Then, almost like a funeral procession, just about every guy walked up to the TV to check the price, and then they stooped down to check the price on the Sony BD player. At that point, they all pretty much walked away since the combo is ~$7K.

Sony or someone else in the BDA really needs to get a lower priced stand alone out there. CES is going to be interesting...

That is funny. But I wonder if the lady had the dinero for it while the rest don't?

Yeah, you should point them to the PS3 counter to get their BD player.

Oh yes we noticed it and it has been discussed . I have been all over the places these past few days spending giftcards and have not seen any ps3's in stores. the only day that I saw one was on launch day when I picked mine up at ebgames.
It's funny you guys are talking about how "out of stock" the PS3 is. I saw them in stock at three different stores today. The 20 gig was out of stock but Fry's, EB, and Circuit City in my area all had the 60 gigs stock. It actually took me longer to set it up than to run out and purchase it. Maybe I just had some good luck today.

I actually was thinking the opposite...I thought demand dropped off, but if you go to those same stores tomorrow they'll probably be gone. Oh well, I got mine!

There are no PS3's in my area, and I live in a major city in an affluent suburb. I simply got lucky to get a PS3 via the "Amazon customer's vote" process right before Christmas. There was a 1 in 44 chance of being selected, and I just got lucky. I signed up fully expecting there was no way I'd be selected. Once I was selected, well, I figured it was a sign from the gods that I should get a PS3 and BD.

It is one hell of a piece of equipment. I still cannot believe I have it. I haven't even started the internet connectivity part of it.

I've been absorbed :
1.)Watching MI:3, Kingdom Of Heaven, & Black Hawk Down. Next up is X3: The Last Stand, which from what I sampled yesterday is also stupendous.

2.)Playing NHL2K7. This is a really fun game.

That's all for now. Never thought I'd be playing games as much as I have, but you can only watch a limited selection of movies so many times. My machine is running well and cool. No problems thus far.

Ive got a wierd PS3 story, not really a story but. I was sitting in a plane flying home from Dallas last night (went to see a Mavs Game) and I was one of the first to board. A few minutes later I saw a guy walk in with a PS3 in his hand. His seat was all the way in the back of the plane and when he walked by everyone immediatly stared at him and watched him walk all the way back to his seat. I thought it was pretty funny, I have no clue why he brought a PS3 on a plane tho

It's funny, I've seen atleast 1 60gb PS3 at both Walmarts, the one Best Buy and a target by me everytime I've been since Xmas. What I have yet to see is a 20gb Version.

Are they shipping less of them or are the 20gb just selling better? Any numbers on the two setups?

You can't even find a 20GB only 60GB are available in my area. I beleive the profit level is much greater on the 60GB.

Awesome, Esox!

You should try the internet playstation store. I downloaded about seven game demos and they keep me entertained for hours! GT5(HD?) is probably the most amazing game I have ever seen. Unreal. Motorstorm is a blast. Resistance is very cool but I keep getting my ass shot. The F-1 racing one is good. Genji is good eye candy. And there are some BD trailers to look at as well....

Mine is cool and quiet.

Enjoy!

So happy your little chunk of the US is so "major and affluent". That has nothing to do with how available the PS3 is in your area. I garauntee I could find one in a couple hours using itrackr. Now if I decided to randomly drive around and look for one, that would be a different story, but we must be smarter than the toy. If someone really wants one, they can get one.

Like I said (and I live in a large and affluent city too ) it took me less than an hour to find it in three stores, you just gotta know how to look. They are there. How would anyone who already owns a PS3 "know" they are out of stock. Why do you keep looking? All three stores I found them at, didn't have them on display...I had to ask. Maybe you just think they are out of stock...unless you are asking for it in every store you walk into for some strange reason.

It's funny. I love how certain people really, really want the product they support to be out of stock. It means they were correct in their purchase. Everyone was saying the same thing about the 360 drive and then I would have to explain, once again, they are around if anyone would just take the time out to look. I even tracked items in other cities to prove it (Wiis and PS3s).

I think a accurate statement would be that Sony is losing less money on the 60gb over the 20gb.

I'm sure if you used itrackr, you could probably know exactly where to get one. The point was not that they aren't available, but rather that the PS3 is some sort of collosal failure that is sitting on store shelves. That is simply not the case.

Why do I still look? Well, that is a big assumption on your part. Especially since I've only had mine for 1 week. But I absolutely guarantee you that, yes, if I'm at a place like Best Buythat carries PS3, I do go over and ask if they have them on stock, and they don't. Who says I am only entitled to buying one anyway? YOU Again, I don't doubt that if you use Itrackr, you could find one in my area. But they certainly are NOT sitting on store shelves by me. That's all, plain and simple. Believe it or don't believe it.

What's funny is that you know nothing about me, but somehow have come to the conclusion that I want it to be out of stock to validate my purchase? That sounds like some sort of school yard, playground taunting logic if you ask me. How old are you?

I don't need to validate my purchase in any way. BD is not going anywhere, and the PS3 is hard to find in my area. That's all I'm saying based on my observation; I'm sorry you weren't able to be along with me at the stores. I looked casually for about a month. You can certainly call me "stupid" for just popping into stores when I had time to look, and yes, it was an unsuccessful aproach. What YOU need to understand is that PS3 is in short supply and not everyone in the US can use Itrackr. And even if they do use Itrackr, they have lives/commitments outside of their home entertainment desires whereby sometimes they cannot make it to store in time to get one if they see it pop up in stock via Itackr.

And you are getting a bit too froggy my friend. When I said "some people" I wrote it that way as to not direct the commet at you in particular. What I took issue with was your "big city, affluent" comment. I remember driving by a subdivision in Washington DC around 96. It was called "The Upper Crust". I got the same nausiating feeling when I read your comment. It was a bit off putting.

My point is, the PS3 is easier to get than people make it out to be. You are right, we both have lives out side of our entertainment centers...that's exactly why I use itrackr, so I don't waste time. I wrote what I wrote as a comment on the direction of the thread as a whole and I also included the 360 as an example of how people will spin info to fit their needs...again...not directed at you. I only quoted you because I was directing my initial comment at you...not the whole post.

Anyway, unlike most, all my info is listed in my profile. I'm not hiding anything. Sorry if you took offense.

Sorry, I didn't mean it to be offensive. I meant more in the sense of trying to explain why they don't seem to be in my area. As in, lots of "spoiled" people who have "everything". That's all.

No problem. I wasn't offended, just more kind of like WTF!!!

There were several PS3's, both 20 and 60 at the Best Buy near me. I grabbed a 60 and Kingdom of Heaven. At the checkout, the guy kinda jokingly asked 'what, no games?'. I said I am mainly getting it for the BD movies. He asked if Kingdom was any good, and I said I hadn't seen it and just wanted at least 1 BD movie to watch right away. Was kinda humorous that he commented on no games.
The Target store by me ( Northwest Ohio) had several P3's for sale over the weekend. There didn't seem to be any rush to purchase them.
Kingdom looks amazing but honestly me and the better half both found it a bit dull. And we LIKE these kind of films. If you've seen Gladiator you've seen a better version of Kingdom. There were SO many parallels and Ridley really needs to chill with the high speed shutter, shaky cam, dirt flying through every shot in the battle sequences thing. It's VERY impressive and VERY technically accomplished but not very entertaining or engaging we felt. I like Orlando but he just can't carry the film in my opinion. We just couldn't care less what happens to the main character and that is NOT good in a film that wants to keep your attention for 3 hours.
But it sure as hell looks great and is a great showcase of what Blu-Ray can do.

JUST my (our, actually) opinion(s)

Dave, had I noticed it and/or remembered, I probably would've gotten Black Hawk Down instead. Even though the BB had a lot of BD movies, none of them were very appealing at all. That's kind of the problem with both formats now. There's a lot of released, but a whole lot of them just plain suck as far as movies. Great quality presentations, but the actual movies are fairly bleak.
Hi Monty!

As a first impression disc for Blu-Ray, Kingdom is hard to beat! It blew us away and we were grinning for a good hour and a half just from the huge quality leap in PQ and AQ before we kinda realized that the film wasn't really doing much for us. My fiancee kept saying, "dude, (yes, she says "dude") this is SO much like Gladiator..." I agreed except Gladiator was fun and intruiging. And Russell has star power. He can carry that kind of pic. Even when just glowering. Orlando kind of pouted through Kingdom and just didn't cut it for us. We both really liked him in the LOTR films but here, trying to carry the picture, he just seems in over his head. Also the role is very sparsely written we felt and for that kind, like Maximus in Gladiator, you REALLY need not just someone who can act but someone with major screen presence and charisma.

Just in our opinions...
We have The Searchers queued up next. Now THAT is a classic and supposedly looks amazing!

You WILL NOT be dissapointed by The Searchers. I have the HD-DVD and what an amazing job they did on this classic. Great Film and fantastic demo disc in my opinion to show what the formats are capable of when it comes to older & classic films.
I also have Searchers coming up on netflix. Another movie I really hope to see in HD is Master and Commander. I wonder which format it'll be on. I have both the PS3 and the hddvd 360 addon. At this point, I'd prefer BD movies for the HDMI 1080p aspect.

I didn't really care for Gladiator all that much, and my fav Crowe movie is Master and Commander. I'll watch Kingdom after work in about 8 hours.
I went searching for Nitendo DS Lite today and visited ~10 stores in affluent area of Northern VA (Tyson's Corner area). Found several PS3s in stock, but no DS Lite and no Wiis. I came away with opposite conclusion to OP, that PS3 is in trouble.

ok, edit. We finished KOH tonite and it gets better. Picks up some momentum and seems to actually generate some emotion for the characters. Far from a great film but decent and very impressive technically. I heard a music cue from THE CROW at about the 2 hour mark and thought I was going mad but sure enough in the credits at the end, "The Crow descends" by Graeme Ravell along with a piece from The Crow 2 and some other film music... hmmm.. Guess they needed more music for the extended cut?

Did you catch the musical cue from "The 13th Warrior"? That was actually in the theatrical cut and the Director's Cut. It's during the "Rise a Knight" scene where Balian makes all the guys "knights" before the big battle.

I swear when I was in the theater watching this, and the music jumped to that cue, I wanted to say, "Lo there do I see my mother..." The 13th Warrior is one of my guilty pleasures. Not great cinema, but it's kind of a guy movie. Wendol attacks us, we attack them, they attack us, we attack them, etc. We try to go fix the problem at the source, this pisses the Wendol off. They come to us for a big final battle. The End.

Wow I had a lot of problems with this movie. It shows saladin about as accurately if they showed bin laden visting the WTC and giving his approval. Painful movie to watch in it's innacurate depiction of mohammed's allah's armies.
