Your first player, BD or HD DVD?

What player did you buy first, BD or HD DVD (assume PS3 is a BD player if you intend to watch BD's on it)

Edit: If you intended on buying both but didn't because of launch dates/availability vote "both" anyway
post #2 of 31
im a person who buys what's new, so hd came out first, if bd came out first i would have bought that first, if they came same day, i would have bought both

Why is this in the sofware section?

I should have been clearer, if you wanted both but one was unavailable/not launched then really you should vote for both since that's what you would have done if you had the choice

Only BD
Wow, these results are strange considering its the BD forum

Bought HD DVD then BD then sold both and got PS3.

Darn, already voted HD DVD first BD second.

hd first, bd second. I got the HD-A1 for $300 and the PS3 for $500. Format Neutral for $800 = Priceless!

Sweet, I'm trying to do the same, but can't find a list price PS3, yet!

I began buying Blu-Ray discs some 3 months before I got my own player.
I was originally waiting for the Sony BDP-S1.
I came across VE avs dealon the HD-A1 for $415 shipped with a free HDDVD and jumped in since my wife didn't know what else to buy me for my B-Day in sept.
I then about 3 weeks later aquired my Sammy BD-P1000 and decided it was good enough and didn't need to wait any longer for the sony.

Since then I have also picked up the HDDVD add on ($159 CC coupon)
And also came up on a launch PS3 60gb!

So now I have the best of both worlds in both my HT setups!

I just bought the A2 (to tide me over until universal players from high-end manufacturers like Denon or Onkyo are available).

I got the add-on for the Xbox 360 on Xmas day and got my PS3 on Wednesday. I was planning on just having the HD-DVD add-on until I realized I had enough gift cards to only pay $89 for a 60 GB PS3....couldn't resist.

Had my HD-A1 first. Picked up the Sammy BD player for about 2 weeks, Returned for the Panny. kept the Panny for about a week than got a 20GB PS3. PS3 stayed!

A1 first: Loved HD. Purchased a 60G PS3; I am not a gamer but I have a 14y.o. son. Purchased a A2 just before Christmas as my kids complained about the slow load times on the A1. May purchase an XA2 but will wait till a few in-hand reviews come out. I will also purchase a stand alone Blu Ray but I will wait until some of the issues around audio codecs/updates/BD live are finalized. Hopefully a G2 Blu Ray with the issues resolved will be announced at CES.

Happy New Year

John

Interesting results.

I'm guessing 90% of "HD DVD first/BD second" is becuase of Sony's PlayStation 3?

It's the only reason why I own Blu-ray.

Yep. If the PS3 didn't come with a built in BR Player then I would neither own a Blu Ray player or a PS3.

I had been waiting for the PS3 for a long time because of the included Blu-Ray.

Granted the 360 does HD-DVD but I never considered going that route because the performance of the Toshiba A1 was almost enough to get me to pull the trigger. If I could have bought it at Costco I would have!

When I could buy a PS3 at Costco ... I did.

I just bought the A2. I really really dislike this format war! How many think that the big CES announcement will be that Toshiba/DVD Forum and Sony/BR Alliance will announce they will only output combo players from now on and over time all releases will be HD one side, BR other side?

One can always hope, right!

This is the reason that polls in the forum are never accurate...

BECAUSE OF POSTERS LIKE Dave-Blu-Ray WHO CLAIMED IN THIS HD DVD THREAD http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=772883 TO OWNING AN HD DVD PLAYER WITH ISSUES!

AND NOW JUST VOTED AS HAVING ONLY A BLU-RAY PLAYER!

Bought into HD-DVD back in April. My Blu-ray player is due to arrive today. WoooHooooo!

Maybe he's telling the truth in the Poll, which wouldn't affect the accuracy of the Poll

Bump

I had the XA1 but returned it because it was too expensive and HD-DVDs didn't have anything coming down the pipe.

Initially bought the HDDVD addon for the xbox 360. But got bored waiting for HDDVD releases, so I bought a refurb Sammy P1000. Being format neutral is the best!
