And that would be a problem because?

Boca Pimp,
The renderings look great. I like the design of the rear columns, but, they look like they crowd the space. In-walls?
Can't wait to see your progress.

Sincerely,

Update for you guys..

well started up on the wiring of the room, we will be installing a new direct line to the main panel, and creating a sub panel for the theater, to make sure the power wont be interrupted or bothered by anything else in the house. We also ran some of our conduit, and wires into the room, ran the cat5 lines, the speakers for all 7.2 system, and then started to run all the lighting for the stage, soffit, riser, columns, and even the rope lights in the light tray. I'am also posting up the pictures from the last few days, i been busy working and have forgotten, showing you the finished build out of the soffit, and the corners that have a awesome groove to make a nice tight corner for the fabric.

the platform riser also got partly finished today, we finished the underneath, by shaping it, stuffing it, and then securing it to itself making it strong so anyone will feel safe on it, we also went ahead and started the step area which you can see is now a radius that will match the stage wall. We also installed the conduit (which you cant see) running to the 3 gang box, and the 2 gang box for a Accessories panel, and a regular outlet. All the conduit in the room has foam batting behind it, which you cant see to stop any thought of a vibration or movement.

Now you got ME thinking of making them.

Also, the HD81 has a huge offset, so you won't even come close to mounting it that low to the floor.

Nah, that wouldnt work, becuase these are to HIDE the rear speakers, since we are going with a full 7.2 system.. good idea thoug..hmm.. for the sides.

As it turns out, that's what he specifically wanted. Same GOM RED color, same black. Even the same pannel approach. I imagine that's why it looks similar. :P

Ryan glad to see you doing more modeling, you really kick arse on mine thanks again. Boca looking good can't wait to see the final product.

You could certainly hide speakers in them. In fact, that black part on the right side of the image I drew is a grill for a speaker. Here, I made it more clear.

UPDATE--------

Hey well we got a lot done today and this weekend, sorry been really busy to update but i promise i will try and get on the updates daily since there is allot going on now. AS you an see we ran about 100 feet of cables below, and thats just for the Accessorie Panel in the room, which will prolly never get used. but it will have the following ports on it (DVI+HDMI+Cat5+Coax CATV+Composite+Component+L/R Speaker Banana Jacks) We have a lot a lot of cable you can see it stretched into my family room from my entry it was so long..

We went ahead and cut down the columns, they were to big for the speakers, and they were not solid, we glued them and made them stronger, then mounted them to the wall and made sure to leave them floating from the platform. We cut down from 13.5 to 9inches.. we skinned them up, since the speakers to go in them are only 8.5 deep, there was no need for them to be huge, next we are going to cut out the middles and make nice pop in grills for them, just waiting on the material to come in for the grills..

Lastly we started to rip down the current stage, and found that the first helper i hired had left the sand wet, and was actually starting to mildew, so we went ahead and ripped all of that out, and dumped it, and brought in a brand new pallet of the correct sand, nice and dry and ready to stuff (hopefully tomorrow).. thats right a pallet!! 3,000 lbs of sand going into my stage.

WOW THATS allot OF CABLE!!!

OLD COLUMN

NEW COLUMN MOUNTED AND READY TO GO

YUP 3,000LBS! (Not all in picture, couldnt fit, had to stock pile in the garage)

Boca...Is the riser step you have pictured in front of the door made with fiber pressboard? If so, being on concrete it will draw moisture from the slab. Also, are you going to have this room inspected? If so, any stair landings and any door has to have a 36" x 36" 'landing'. If your not getting it inspected, great. Looks good and keep the pictures coming.

Hey guys, another BIG BIG update for the theater. EVEN BIGGER THEN APPLE RELEASING A NEW IPOD (do we even care anymore?)..

all windows are now covered, we used R19 insulation and double drywall with green glue in between. no more nasty windows in the theater.

Then we went ahead and started to stuff our soffit with 5.5inch acoustic material as per Bpape had told us to do. our HVAC being worked into the soffit, which we had to custom make brackets to hope the box and faceplates, as you can see we used MDF for the frame to old it, and made a nice clean finish to it. Also installed our return the same way.

the next couple of days we worked on our curved screen wall to hold the massive SMX 10 foot monster screen (2:35:1).. we also added a curved to the front light tray for the stage and then went out on the sides to hold our acoustic material.

we tested our new florida lights, in the soffit to see how they would look and fit, due to high heat we had to build 12 MDF guards (if you look in the picture) to keep any chance of the heat getting to the acoustics stuffed into the soffit.

Here is the platform step, as you can see its particle board on top of 2x4s, curved shape to match stage, and then routers to a smooth bullnosed end for carpet.

a few toys came in to, HCM331 Cameras for the outdoors and then the BLC30 for the inside, might post it up and let you guys watch while we complete the work.. who knows..or maybe just to make sure the sandmanX stays out of my theater.. HAH!

Also today got in the Samsung Q1 for my theater remote (i will be running cinemar). and also got in the Viewsonic Airpanel today.. cant wait to use these..!!!

hey i need some feedback, should i cover my star panels in GOM 701 black, or in Fidelio velvet (this stuff is true black)

we put up a test strip and started to notice it killed the LEDs in my soffit, is it worth it to have a brighter star field on the velvet background, or any other ideas of how i can get back the brightness of the LED rope light in the soffit?
I posted a similar question in Rubens forum, but any additional pics about how your soffits work as places for HVAC, lighting, wiring and treatment? I am trying to figure this aspect out. I think you ran your ducts on the exterior edge, built a skeleton on in the interior. Ran MDF to mount those lights (what's the price range on thoses? Diameter on the light?), and then jammed insulation everwhere you could. That's what I think you (and Ruben) did. But more pics would help, along with any clarifications.

Nice thread, too BTW.

The soffit contains all the wiring, cotton bass absorbtion and the Florida lights with U shaped mdf protective boxes on the back of the lights. The duct work is coming out of his attic above the soffit. The light tray is on front of the soffit. The bottom of the soffit is open to absorb bass. I will take some pictures today.

That would be great Ruben. I need to get back to my carpenter this weekend on my soffit. There is a pipe and some flex duct for another floor that I will need to enclose to soundproof, but I need to plan the second phase. I gotta find a free minute to plug my basics into sketchup.

Have you tried raising the soffit lights closer to the ceiling? With a 12 ft ceiling hight the degree of black shouldn't make that big a difference, especially when the picture's up and the lights are down.
Also, what if you added a reflective, bounce material in the location of the rope light?
Thread Starter
well we did try to do the reflective material, using some shiny tape, but that just didn't work, the velvet is so dense in black, that it eats up the light..

didn't try rasing the rope light closer, and we didn't want to because, you dont want to see the actual rope light, and you don't want the LED pattern showing on the ceiling, so we have to keep it far enough away that it wont project the shadow of the LED

we might try doubling up on the rope to see if that works, but im having false hopes..

Here are some pictures of BocaPimps theater so far. We finished the rest of the panels today for the walls and should be installing them by tomorrow.

Looks great so far Bocapimp and SandmanX,

Is that a preview of the screen frame we've been hearing about? Waiting with anticipation on that one.

Also curios about the panel with the pipe running through it. What's that one for?

What did you guys decide to do with the rear half columns?

I'm amazed with the progress so far and how quickly things are and will come together.
Good luck with the rest of the work. Keep the pic's coming.

The panel with the pipe is for speaker wire. That panel goes on the back wall with 3 other panels all wrapped in GoM.

He is doing the rear half columns.

The frame in the picture is not the SmX frames I have coming in. That is just 2 x 2 aluminum bent and welded for Boca Pimps SmX screen.

More update pictures tonight!

Well more has been done, we finished the side walls with fabric, and then the bottom of the room with the black GOM panels. Then wrapped the columns in there fabric also.

We are trying to decide about the PJ box, if we should flush mount the Isco II lens, or have it stick out of the box 2-3 inches to expose just the lens from the box, i think its a good idea, just to show where the PJ really is, rather then have a little hole and nothing exposed.. any thoughts guys, since we are going to be working on this tomorrow..

I would say if you are trying to have your theater set up to sell things, you have to show them off. If you are doing it for yourself, who cares. hide things and make it look nice. But, if you are a techie who likes to see the goods, that's o.k. too.

Go with whatever you think would look best, as you are the boss...

Boca,

I still can't find the carpet info that I used. It is definately all black though with a pattern. I am pretty sure it was from the Shaw mill.
