How do you calibrate picture/contrast?

I'm having trouble calibrating this setting. I am using the THX test pattern on the incredibles DVD and the test screen on Sony Blu-Ray discs.

On the THX test, it says to turn contrast all the way up and then turn it down until you can see 4 white boxes. But I can already see 4 white boxes on the max picture setting.

I'm not sure how to use the Sony Blu-Ray contrast/picture test screen. Does anyone know how?

where is this on the DVD ?
is it only on the HD version ?

One way is to run contrast down until white areas appear gray, then back up just until they appear white again.

I'm using a Sony Bravia XBR2, it's a 46 inch 1080p LCD

Greetings

Turn it up to crush whites ... and boxes disappear. Then ...

Reduce it until you see all boxes ... then

Look for discoloration in the boxes? Red? Pinkish? then turn it down more.

Final test ... if watching stuff still gives you eye fatigue ... then turn it down even more.

Hmm... I think I suck at this. I still see all the boxes at maximum Picture level.

That's often true of digital displays. You could set the contrast with actual DVD content - after you've set the brightness with the calibartion DVD, find one of those scenes that are problematic for you and adjust the contrast down until you don't see the white crush any longer. You may have to do this with 3 or 4 different DVDs to find the "average" setting. You may also find that this results in a darker picture than you're used to. At that point you can adjust the brightness to compensate.

Should I set the color temperature to neutral before calibrating contrast, or does it matter?

No difference on the color temp setting.

But remember that contrast is interactive with brightness.

The Sony's lcd's don't seem to crush/clip whites when picture (contrast) is turned all the way up. On my 32XBR2 I turn it all the way up then back it down until discoloration (Redish, Pinkish) is gone.

Yeah, I found that worked for me too. I turned it down to about 91 when I saw no more red/pink.

BTW: I found using gray step ramp easier to detect and removing colorshifting easier for me than a 100% white box/window.
