Which is your favorite resolution for a G70 ?

What resolution (16:9) have you found to suit best for your G 70 ? Also do you prefer 72/75 Hz or 60/50 Hz.

I use mainly PAL film material and output from my VP50 to my G 70 1440 x 768@75 Hz but would like to hear if I should try something else

I'm using a 2500mm wide 16x9 1.25 screen with a Lumagen PRO feeding the G70 and after a lot of experimenting I now use:

PAL:
864p @ 75hz

NTSC:
720p @ 72hz

I was getting terrible motion judder at 50 and 60 hz - sorted when I moved to 75 / 72 hz

90% of what I watch is PAL film.

720p for upconverted NTSC DVD

1080i for Blu-Ray from the PS3

(I usually use 720p for PAL too but that's because I have very little PAL and I guess I'm lazy.)

Where are you located? The answer really depends on whether you're using NTSC or PAL.

In either case though, I have found that the source determines the best resolution. I don't run standard definition DVDs at the same resolution as an HD source.

NTSC= 60 or 72 Hz and Pal is 50 or 75 Hz. There are arguments for each refresh rate and it also depends on the ultimate resolution chosen.

Since I wrote in my original post "I use mainly PAL film material" I thought that this would have give a pretty good clue about my situation

Barcoed I think that "864p @ 75hz" you mean 1440 x 864 ? If so do you think that I can achieve the correct other values by using 1440 x 960 from VP50 and simply changing ver. res. from 960 to 864 ? = no need to change any other values ?

Has anyone personal experience any recommended resolution @ 50 Hz for PAL film or do you have same opinion as Barcoed = too much motion judder ? I remember reading that someone has been using 1920 x 864 @ 50 Hz for PAL film.

You posted BOTH NTSC & PAL refresh rates (60/72 Hz and 50/75 Hz) Just because you state "I use mainly PAL film material" STILL doesn't tell me where you're located.

I have no way of knowing WHERE you're trying to use your "mainly PAL film material. Maybe you're running a 50Hz refresh and powering you VP-50/and or G70 at 60 Hz.

You never even said what problems you were having, if any, with your current settings.

In addition, I recalled some VP-50 problems a while back. I think this is the thread from it, but I'm not certain, there might have been others. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...=733540&page=3

I have no idea!
Neither the Lumagen nor the G70 will tell me.

67500Hz is the only other number the G70 will give me, which relates, I think, to the 864 and the 75Hz.
Can anyone tell us what the horizontal resolution' will be based on these figures?

Chastising the people that are trying to help you is probably not the smartest thing in the world to do. That's a good way not to get anymore help.

It's especially ill advised to chastise Bruce, who is by far the most knowledgable AVS member when it comes to G70s.

Hey Phil, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

As far as chastisings goes, it doesn't bother me in the least, since I'm not the one who "thinks" they either have a problem.....or is looking to make one.

Besides Phil, if you recall, the reason we have the "secret handshake" is to keep the really secret information SECRET!

That's it man! We can't divulge the *really secret stuff* (like setting the G2 on the new firmware).

I think you've said too much already. Of course do you remember all those resolution tests that were performed on the G70? After all those resolution tests and the discussion that followed, I never expected to see more questions about resolution......especially where the G70 is concerned.

I sent out an electronic message to all current club members (which remains at 68 members). 6 members are G90 owners......including Cliffy. As you all know, since we implemented secret pass words and hand shakes, we haven't had ANY security problems.

Once again........to all my friends and G70 club members-----

HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!!

Thank´s for all help so far

I think I will try barcoed´s values = I will just choose 1440 x960 from VP50 and change the 960 to 864/720. If someone care suggest something other, please let me know.

So that there will not be any misundertandings I want to say that my meaning in my earlier message was not to be negative towards anyone let alone to be ungreatful. I honest believe that every information I can get is helpfull to me.

If I have however by mistake gave that impression it must be only because my native language is not english so if I have used sometimes wrong english words - I´m truely sorry about that.

I live in a PAL land but I still don´t think that this is the issue here = I was only trying to say when I said I use mainly PAL film material that I will also using some NTSC material = so I was looking for information for both cases, gearet to PAL contents thought.

I really envy your gyus with the all secrect information you chare to each other in your club - as you can see from my questions to me even a simply (?) task to how to choose the right resolution and refresh rate is something I have ask.

IMHO to the continuation of CRT it is pity if all the wisdom is not widely chared.

Perhaps after all it is to gyus like me the best thing to turn to the world of digital wonders

I wil also wish the happiest new year to all !

I yet hope you can bear also in the future questions from newbies like myself and hopefully also understand that since this is the best place for information for a crt nut all around the world you may also in future receive questions that are not written in perfect english and for that reason hope you don´t assume right away that the writing was ment to be in any way a negative or a impolite one.

Sorry, but this new technology can't be exported out of the country.

I think you should S-l-o-w-l-y remove your leg from the bucket of warm water before you have an orgasm.

Hey Bob, Happy New Year from UP ABOVE! I was watching New Year's arrive in Melbourne on TV.......and then got to celebrate New Year's again here in NY.

I guess the reason we like Sony projectors so much is because the alternative is to get BARCOed. ....I've never been a big Barco fan.

Of course the one thing being BARCOed can't do that being Sony'ed will.....according to "Barcoed", he can get an orgasm by " rolling up [his] trouser leg and standing in a bucket of warm water in anticipation!.... of a G70 I guess.

Unfortunately like so many things today, the bucket is plastic.

But at risk of enjoying myself too much Did we actually get any further along the line of answering Artoj's original question?
I have always used a 16:9 resolution in the 720p range although through the tests I have done my G70 with it's current calibration settings can resolve up to somewhere around 900p @ 16:9. I am using slightly less than 60hz. This is primarily because I am lazy and it seems to work well for me.

Since I have pruchase a Toshiba A1 I have been using 1080i for HD content and it looks fantastic. I have even started to use it for upscaling normal DVD's instead of using the HTPC and I am very happy with the results. This is all NTSC content except for the two PAL disc's I own: A Pure Formality and Red Sonya. For these I still use the HTPC.

Happy New Year All and I too am glad you are on the bend Bruce!

Has anyone read "Behold a Pale Horse" by William Cooper? According to him the people that roll up the trouser legs are the real "axis of evil" :-) Is anyone on the forum a Freemason or all are you just taking the P*** out of fraternal organisations a a whole? I actually got a breif look at a Freemason's "ritual book" from an old member and made me wonder what all the rituals are about anyway. Kind of had an occult feel about the whole organisation with a bit of Egyptian thrown in for good measure :-)
I was in Melbourne for NYE so maybe you saw me on TV back in NY :-)
I'll be sure to posta CRT related questin next time but for now is good to have a change from the usual tech posts :-)

Happy New Year to All

This is the main reason I've turned down two cheap low hour mint zero wear G-70s in the last six months.
Getting info for these units is like pulling teeth and I refuse to sell my sole to the exclusive clubs here. I'll stick with the XG whose owners see the virtue of info sharing and whose performance is on par anyways.
Happy new year.

I don't really like fish, so don't sell me your sole. On the other hand, i'll show you the secret handshake for your SOUL

I really hate soul. Prefer Rock myself so I guess I could sell you my soul for the secret handshake.
Now i need to find another cheap G-70.
Does the G-70 still suffer from poor reliability, no parts availability, not enough converge adj and poor white balance due lack of adjustability? Ho yea. Did they fix the premature wear and overheating issues?

To answer those questions, you'll have to first have the secret password. You can get one from 666......I mean QQQ
post #28 of 52
To set the record (or should that be MP3 file now?) straight, I have been known to take a drill to a piece of marble in my time - does that make me a Mason?
You're right about the teeth though, Energeezer and mine's already blown a PSU board once I gave it a bit of work to do.

Trouble is, the pictures quite good.

Maybe we should take a club to the nearest G70 guru in order to loosen some teeth!
Only kidding guys!

Yes! All of those things. They're horrible PJs. Don't buy one at any price.

To club members: Don't let civilians bait you with false statements. We're an elitist club. We really don't care what outsiders think.
