Superman Returns in HD and SD on the marketplace

Major Nelson just posted recently that you can download Superman Returns from the marketplace. It would have been nicer if it was closer to the release of the HD-DVD.

It would have been nicer too if the movie was actually good.

Personally I love the movie, but to each there own. I don't understand most peoples criticism of the movie. It seems that everyone wants the movie to be action packed, which I'm glad it wasn't. I really enjoyed the story.

You 'Loved' it?
I can see differences of opinion but this is hardly a movie that allows for such a wide gap from love to trash.

Superman doesn't do anything heroic.
Bosworth (or whatever) is the worst Lois Lane ever
The super Kid is just a terrible idea.
Routh is a pale shadow to Reeve
The movie is a copy of the past 1 and two with no originality
Lex wanting land again? PLEASE.
Bad film quality/drab colors.

If you want to see the Superman legacy done right just watch a couple of seasons of Smallville. That show BLOWS the movie away. I admit there are some soap apera-ish 90210 quality around smallville but look how the Superman character is handles and devloped. Sooooo much better and it's a free TV show!

Superman Returns IMO was by far the weakest Superman movie created, they butchered it and made it into a love movie which was not what the orignals were about. i also agree Reeves>Routh as far as the Superman character goes. With that said its still a superman movie and i still bought it and enjoy the movie, but the story line was questionable...at best.

I thought Routh did an admirable job, but the biggest problem is --

Singer spent $300 million and remade Superman The Movie (plane sequence, luthor and his idiotic minions etc etc). That hacked me off. Look, Donner did a great job in 1978, but it's time to move on.

Kevin Spacey was annoying and goofy as Lex Luthor -- Michael Rosenbaum does a much much better job on Smallville.

I was looking for a reimagining or at least new villains. Batman Begins definitely got this part right.

Oh, and they spent $10 million on a krypton sequence that wasn't even in the movie..singer's going to use it in the sequel

We do disagree on a lot. I guess. I do like smallville also, but I thought Bosworth was a good Lois Lane, and if taking a giant piece of rock that can kill you into space to save the world isn't heroic I don't know what is. I do completely agree that the choice on how he filmed the movie sucked big time.

Oh well, to each there own.

agree with this point. it was the only part of the movie that caused me to wince in pain...
Although I didn't care that much or Superman Returns, it's decent.

Smallville is trash, IMO. I hate it.
that movie wasn't a superman movie. it was some romantic movie about a guy loosing his girl friend.

it was a lame and pointless movie.

Thanks for the heads up, i will buy it on my day off...
Yeah, but it looks really good on HD-DVD! I have noticed I have been watching movies that I didn't like just because they look good... King Kong, Superman Returns, etc....

It'll wear off.. Personally the price they want for the rental is money I'd put towards a good HD-DVD movie..

Any comments as to the quality of this release, I don't have an HD-DVD player and I do hear the X360 HD drive has it's share of problems mainly with the audio. So just out of sheer interest, how does this stack up against the highly saturated SD-DVD and HD-DVD version.
tsk... the movie was weak. I'll pass....

Thanks for the heads up.

Ok then maybe the movie should be called "Superman lifts stuff". He lifted a plane and a giant rock that was only dangerous to him. Hardly heroic compared to what Superman is all about. The plane rescue was the best part.
Superman has an excellent sense of moral judgement as well as superior intellect. Getting pounded by Lex luthor was just a sad moment in the Superman legacy.
As far as it being a love movie it just wasn't, it was the opposite.
There was always admiration surrounding Superman. In this movie we have a Lois Lane who is just angry and with some other dude, it was just strange.
Kevin Spacey was decent as Lex but why the greatest criminal mind would have to bilk an old lady out of her money to get more money seems out of place too.

Man, the more I think about this movie the more wrong I see with it. BTW I am not just a movie fan here I have been a Supes fan since I was a kid going back to the comics.

Then you aren't a Superman fan.

No, I'm a Supes fan- I'm not a "Clark Kent during his teenage years in a cheesy soap-opera" fan. Smallville is not a "Superman" show. I'm also not a big fan of major changes to the origin of a character, unless done with good reason, or to modernize the source material. Clark and Lex Luthor being teenage friends in the show actually caused the book writers to retcon Luthor's origin in the comic to parallel the show. Lame.

Admittedly though, I am a much bigger Batman fan.

I love this movie and I have watched it five times since I saw it in theaters. It does need a serious enemy and more action.

Dude this movie is totally fantastic. It takes depth of thought to enjoy a great story like the one told in Superman Returns. It does need more action but you know what it was a great movie as it stands. They should put Metallo in the next film.

lol.
What depth? I'm not even asking for action. Look at my list of things I cited. The original movie didn't have constant action, in fact it took a while just to show Superman.
The new movie is devoid of good drama. It doesn't have Depth it's just a very weak movie. Compare it to Spiderman, Xmen, or any of the newer hero movies. It is just a dull exercise.

I just wish they would fix the HD audio so I can enjoy the movie
post #23 of 40
I haven't seen the movie yet in HD. It got rather mediocre reviews for the HD-DVD. I'm planning to rent it from Netflix. I did hear though that the TrueHD soundtrack is phenomenal.

I saw that the movie was 7 GB on the Marketplace. I can't imagine how long that would take to download! Plus, I only have like 8 GB free right now. They really need to make a larger hard drive available.

just be happy that we got a superman movie after what 20 years

the movie still made 200 million and is doing great on DVD sales. was it as action packed as we wanted ,,,,NO but it was a movie to reintroduce the character to some people that didnt really see the origionals.

Stop comparing Routh to Reeve. Superman needed a no name guy, not a Jude law, Ashton Kutcher, etc. Routh is the closest to Reeve we will ever see again. He did a finejob by me.

Bosworth did a good job as lois lane, for those of you that are bitching about it, who did you want margot kidder?

parker posey would've been a better lois...

i'm a bigger batman fan but i don't think smallville is trash

Then I would next question how many episodes you have watched, It sounds as though you have been turned off by Smallville in concept.
Sure, it has some soap operaish undertones BUT the effects used in the show are probably as good, if not better, than some of the stuff I have seen in the movies. Clark flying and so forth plus his heat vision looks much more effective in smallvile.

As for his changes to origin, there really isn't any. He came here in a ship and grew up in Smallville. The bigger difference here is that the Kryptonite has an effect on humans as well as Kryptonians which makes the storyline far more interesting and I think a brilliant change to Superman.
There are also some changes to the legacy indicating that Jor el has been to Earth in the early past and left behind relics and signs for later generations to find. It could be that the Kryptonians knew their destruction was near and planned on colonizing Earth at some earlier date.
In any case I think you should start from the beginning and work your way forward because you are missing out on a really good show.
In the coming weeks we are going to be treated to the early workings of the justice league with a young Flash, Green Arrow, Aquaman and Superman. It's just getting good. Although last season there were some pretty low points with Lana as a vampiress and turning into this Isabella character. But hey, it's a weekly show with new redemption every week.

I guess I'm one of the few admirers of Routh and Singer's work in Superman Returns, but I'll sing their praises loudly. It wasn't a perfect movie by any means. But it was certainly worth watching, and especially for the TrueHD soundtrack, watching repeatedly.

I Never said that the Movie was trash, it's just not very good. It's Medicore at best with a couple of shining moments.

Honestly if you don't like it thats fair but others did so don't trample on what could be their favourite movie, Its my favorite superman movie. I saw all of the originals when I was young, grew up watching lois and clark, and following smallville religously since it started, its a new superman so don't crap on it cause it wasn't your bag of tea.
