PS3 with 1080i CRT RPTV? (Pioneer PRO-530HDI)

Since the TV itself is capable of displaying in the order of 1200 to 1300 lines of horizontal resolution ... (equate to 1.3 million pixels) ...

Why feed it a 930K signal? So it can then make up the missing detail out of thin air?

Why not feed it the 2 million pixel source and savor at least 1.3 million pixels of the image with nothing "made up"

TV can show 1.3 million pixels of detail.

Give it a 930,000 pixel image ... (Where's the missing 370,000 pixels of information?) So the TV scales the 930,000 image to fit the 1.3 million pixel capability. Scaled information (ie fake info).

Give the TV a 2 million pixel image to begin with and the TV throws away 700,000 pixels ... but the remaining 1.3 million pixels are real detail.

1.3 real versus ... (0.93 real + 0.37 fake)

1.3 not equal to 1.3.

With a CRT RPTV, especially such a fine one as an Elite, definitely feed it 1080i. The scaling issue will only rear its ugly head for 720p encoded content (including games). This is where you need to have tv that can convert the 720p cleanly into 1080i (which Michael aptly notes is a difficult process involving the "guess" of ~ 33% of your pixels). My Tosh does a terrible job, an external video processor usually solves that issue.

I would pressure Sony to develop some internal scaling using that much vaunted Cell processor, but until then 720p games should look alright to great on your particular set.

ps3 does great with 1080i crt sets that support 720p as well. My hitachi s500 has a great bd picture and 720p games are impressive scaled to 1080i. Not sure what micheal was suggesting but you likely wont get a picture feeding your set a 1080p signal.

I also have a Hitachi S500, and my obervations are the same, 720P games look great and I output my BD movies in my tv's native resolution of 1080i with phenomenal results.

I have the same TV Pioneer Elite PRO-530HDI, are you able to send a 720P signal from you PS3 and get a picture? I was thinking of buying Resistance-Fall of Man but noticed that it only supports 720P. Can you clarify.

I have the PRO-530HDi, since I have upgrade to HD Cable and the PS3, the images are stretched/expanded? Anyone else have this issue? I have tried different HDMI cables, component Video, change settings on the HD box to even 4:3, 16:9 480p etc. No results? eg, the sidebars on ESPN, the letters are partially cutoff??
