Onkyo HD player?

Does anybody know which side of the fence Onkyo is sitting on the HD DVD / Bluray saga. I love my Onkyo DVD player and would like to upgrade to a HD Onkyo player and preferably in the HD DVD format.

Does anyone have any info on any new players coming out from onkyo?

Thanks.

I believe Onkyo is firmly in the HD DVD camp.

Excellent. Thanks for that.

Am I okay to output from a hd-dvd player in Component through a Onkyo 701 reciever (no HDMI on that model) and into my panny PT-AE500 at 720p.

Do these players do the downscale to 720P or will the projector be the one doing this? And if so will the reciever be fine with a 1080P signal going through it?

Thanks sorry about all the questions, just need to straighten all all this HD stuff

The players will down scale to 720p however I would try it both ways and see which does a better job the player or the projector.

Thanks. Hopefully it will, I was getting worried as they have not released a player for either format yet. possibly waiting for things to become a bit more cost effective.

Excellent My favorite things unite Battlestar: Galactica, HD-DVD and Onkyo

They're not. They have announced support for both formats.

I know they are a member of the hddvd forum, but where did they announce support for anything? I don't believe there has been an announcement to bring a product to the market in either direction. Do you have a link?

Your sure have backed up your statement with empirical data.

No they haven't announced any products in either format so perhaps I shouldn't have written "announced support" when the only thing they've done is joined the HD DVD promotion group and the BDA which happened almost 2 years ago and much can have changed since then. Perhaps we'll see a product announcement or some sort of mock-up prototypes at CES

Would it be fair to say that there are a lot of people waiting for a onkyo HD player (either flavor) or am I in the extreme minority?

I think Onkyo could go both ways but my guess is that they'd look at HD DVD first and then perhaps replace that model with a Universal.

I've an Onkyo DVD player I'd love to replace.

I'm still running a DV-S555 (pre progressive scan days), I would have upgraded to a better onkyo unit about a year ago but decided to wait for HD/BD players. I'm getting pretty anxious now though
post #16 of 69
I doubt Onkyo announces any HD players until the end of 2007 or early 2008... Just my guess though...

Why would you guess that one joerod. Maybe a 360 add-on might be the way to go. Just have to wait for one of those to come out here (Australia) then.
i'm also looking forward to see the first Onkyo HD-DVD... i'm keeping my fingers crossed at the CES, who knows what they will present there.

An interesting sidenote, from what i know (and have seen) a lot of the onkyo dvd-player parts ARE from pioneer, even the firmwares have the pioneer label. Maybe somehow pioneer can benefit from these developments to make a multi player ?

If you want to check out for yourself, take the setup menu of a recent pioneer and onkyo dvd player next to eachother, you'll see what i mean ;-)

But we have already seen a couple of companies suggest a universal player, only to reverse their postiion a few days later. The best guess has been that Blu-ray will not allow it at this point.

I went searching and found this article. Sounds like a press conference is scheduled for January 7 on the eve of CES and is to include other companies besides Toshiba. It might end up being the same old song and dance but it -does- say plans for 2007 will be announced. I would think that would -have- to mean other companies stepping up to the plate at this time with actual player announcements.

I'm not sure the BDA can legally disallow Universal players but they can apply pressure in other ways. Broadcom seems pretty confident that they have some Universal players design wins with the BCM7440. I'm inclined to believe them as the thing we're waiting for is an optical assembly that deftly handles both formats. From an LSI standpoint there are products from a few companies that now handle both. NEC and Broadcom being the biggest so far.

I would expect that the Gov would get involved if they try to stop the production of dual players. They are already investigating both Blu-Ray and HD in Europe. I think that is the reason why certain film companies became neutral.

I find it funny that all the crappy manufacturers "support" BD, while the high quality ones support HD DVD.
I do believe that Onkyo is a member of BOTH the HD DVD group and BD.

IMO a bettter electronics manufacturer than rca and toshiba.

Here's a new Associated Press piece on Onkyo's receiver plans:

http://www.consumerelectronicsnet.co....jsp?id=132136

The article also mentions Onkyo's HD-DVD player plans:

Quote:

In other product developments, Onkyo USA unveiled one new Onkyo-brand DVD player and three Onkyo-brand HTiBs, said it is reevaluating its Onkyo-brand DVD strategy, and is on track to offer its first HD DVD player later this year. It will carry the Onkyo brand name.

This is an old thread. Onkyo has announced an HD-DVD player for later this year.

Onkyo is considering Blu-Ray as well. Maybe a DF player.

Onkyo also announced a new single-disc DVD player, DV-SP405 with 1080p upscaling capability, but it had no further information on when it might enter the high-definition DVD player arena. At CES 2007, it had announced its intent to introduce an HD DVD model, but Haas said that the company is looking at both [the HD DVD and Blu-ray] formats currently, and deciding whether to field either a standalone player or a multiple-format model. He added that a market entry could surface probably closer to the fourth quarter.

Just because Onkyo stated they would make an HD DVD player, you can't infer they would not make a BD player. They never said otherwise.
Whoa

I didn't "infer" anything. I simply stated that Jsl 80 hadn't backed up his statement with any evidence. I've actually always thought that Onkyo would make a good Universal player because they have some nice DVD/DVDA/SACD players.

If Onkyo decides to deliver a Uni I'll be looking harder at them than Samung quite honestly. I have an Onkyo AVR/DVD combo now and I'm happy with it. I'll certainly look their direction again.

In fact it makes more sense for them to make a Universal. Onkyo is likely going to want to play in the higher end arena where there is more profit. I can't see Onkyo trying to deliver a $300 HD DVD player.

If they target a $999 MSRP and add in DVD-Audio and SACD to HD DVD/Blu-ray there will be a lot of people upgrading their hardware. The consolidation of potentially 3 pieces of hardware into one is a far cleaner setup IMO.

I have not a problem with Onkyo looking at Uni. I'm not an HD DVD fanboy. Blu-ray can join the party anytime. I'm just not paying out the nose for a Blu-ray only player.

That comment wasn't directly concerned with your post. More of a general statement based on some of the comments here.

I too would like to see a DF player from them. I just bought an Onkyo 674 receiver and as pleased as a pig in poop with it.
