PS3 Video signal issue

Hey all.

Just hooked up PS3 to my system. I have HDMI out from PS3 into my Samsung QT-T85 receiver, then HDMI out from receiver into Samsung HL-S6187 TV. I have a cable box going into my other TV HDMI input.

When I toggle through the TV's inputs, going from PS3 to cable and then back, I lose the PS3 video signal (and only the video signal, I can still hear the audio) when I try to go back to the PS3. I have to shut off and restart the PS3 in order for the TV to get the video signal back, and sometimes I have to restart two or three times.

I am a complete rookie with this stuff, so maybe I'm missing something obvious. Any help would be tremendously appreciated.

Have you tried bypassing the surround reciever and going straight to the TV to see if itis your reciever or display?

Ok, good call on that one. Bypassing the receiver and going directly into the TV with the PS3 cures the problem.

Unfortunately, I do need to go through the receiver, not just to get the PS3 into the sound system, but because my TV only has two HDMI inputs, one of which is for the cable box, the other being for the receiver which doubles as my SD DVD player. My receiver's one optical input is being used by the cable box.

Is this an incurable conflict between my receiver and the PS3? Could there be a setting within the receiver or the PS3 that will allow me to run the PS3 through the receiver? Or am I going to need to get something that buys me an extra input.

Soxfan111111,

Sounds like you need a HDMI switch. Octavia makes what sound like a quality switch. It actually regenerates the signal giving back what little you may have lost. Don't mistake this for a amplifier it is a regenerator. I Don't own one yet but will soon. Web site is octavia.com

A HDMI switch will help with the amount of inputs you have but I still think you will have the same issue which I think is your reciever. I think you have a handshake issue going on and you need to verify what resolutions your HDMI input accepts too.

It definitely seems to be a handshake issue.

A few more questions:

Would it work if I went HDMI out of PS3 into an HDMI splitter, with one HDMI cable going into the receiver, and one directly into the TV?

The audio plays fine through the HDMI input of the receiver, but the video signal seems to be the problem. Would a splitter work to get the audio into the receiver and the video into the TV, without sacrificing any quality?

Lastly, I just played my first BD (Ice Age 2) on the PS3, and for whatever reason it played in 2.1 stereo, even though the disc was set to play DTS 5.1. My receiver definitely works with DTS, and the PS3 settings, set for HDMI audio, are such that the PS3 sees that the audio receiver accepts DTS. Any idea why then the receiver is only outputting 2.1?
