HD DVD January Releases

Where are all the January release announcements? I know some of the studios wait a week or two before the release to make the announcements but this certainly seems less then what's usually announced per month.

1. Clerk II
2. Lucky Number Slevin
3. The Mummy Returns
4. The Sting
5. Scooby-Doo
6. Poseidon
7. Black Rain
8. Brokeback Mountain
9. Half Baked

Jan Releases Per Studio:
Weinstein - 2
Paramount - 1
Warner - 2
Universal - 4

Blu-ray has almost 3 times that announced, 26 titles announced for BR in January compared to 9 for HD DVD.

I expect some useful announcements at CES but not necessarily more title announcements for January hopefully I'm wrong

Of the above 9 I have pre-ordered two. I hope HD DVD announces more for this month.

I agree. They are really thinning out as of late. Hopefully they have something up their sleeves for the first quarter of 2007... Hopefully...

I at least know of one title from Warner that should be coming out in January that they haven't announced yet. Hopefully there are more.

Maybe we'll get some last minute announcements at CES.

Well I think Warner is holding out on many of there possible HD DVD releases until they have the ability to release the same with equal features on BR at the same time.
The bad thing is a few is just delays from December, hopefully more to come. I know I have slowed way down on my purchases here lately, hopely this isn't a trend. I bought a PS3 mainly for the fact that they at least have a number of titles coming out on BR.

I find it doubtfull there hiding Jan releases for CES. These things are usually available for pre-order for awhile before they are released. Look at Poseidon scheduled for release its been available for pre-order since the summer.

I expect some title announcements at CES but to be released later in the year

Poseidon is an unusual case due to all the delays, but for quite a bit of the format's short lifespan, Warner would announce titles a week/week and a half before they were on store shelves. Maybe they're reverting to form.

I do think it's likely that we're seeing all we're getting in January from Universal, Weinstein, and Paramount, but I wouldn't be surprised to get another small wave of releases from Warner.

Yea I've had titles to watch every weekend for six months but now none for me.

THe the HD DVD group rarely announce any release 1 month before anyway, unless it's a Day To Day, Warner play the 1/2 week game on both BluRay and HD DVD, Universal is usually 4-3 week announcement i won't be suprised if we see a couple more from Uni on Jan 30th..
I'm already broke as it is (45 HD-DVDs and 11 BD's), so I can wait.
It's gonna be a REAL mixed blessing if it turns out that the title I'm waiting on is getting a nice IME experience (it seems made for it), but Warner is holding it back because they want to wait for the BD equivalent to be ready so they can release both simultaneously. But who knows when the hell BD-J tools are going to be ready to do something like that, so I can't imagine that would be the case. I hope not at least!
Well I'm down to none. I watched Dune last weekend. Now I have none. At least I'll have some BD movies to keep me company.
I've actually watched only about 1/4 of the HD-DVDs on my shelf, and I still have plenty of titles in my BBO que, so I'm good for quite a while. But I too hope things start picking up quick enough.
I'm still winding my way through Smallville, but other than that I'm caught up. I'm assuming CES will have a bunch of announcements because the current release schedule is pathetic.

Well there's atleast 18 BR exclusive movies announced for Jan, unless Universal comes out with a whole pile of surprises this is where BR starts to catch up as far as content releases
post #17 of 51
Hey guys
how is The Sopranos been out on HDDVD?
Warner has only announced one wave of titles for January, and I should think there will be at least two, just like past months, so I guess they'll make the announcement soon.

It would be great that Universal is holding on to some surprise but it could be that their list is complete too. Wasn't Conan rumoured for the 30th? So maybe there'll be a third wave of titles on January for Universal...

I don't have much hope with Paramount.

Hasn't this "leaked" list been pretty accurate for releases?

That list is showing a bunch of releases for Dec in the Jan section, nothing we have already stated or is already released is showing on that list for Jan

It's silly to suggest so prematurely that this is a complete list, though.

No I dont think its a complete list at this point and do expect some more announcements but I do see it as very low considering its already Jan and we havent heard anything new announced comming in the next week or two yet

Do you have the image and eagle announcements, if so I can add them to my list

It's been a few months since Warner was this 'bad' about it, but back in May and June (maybe a little longer; too lazy to cross-reference), it was standard operating procedure to wait 6-8 days before street date to announce a title. There's plenty of January left, especially if Warner is eyeing another wave with a couple of titles on 1/30. It'll still be a light month, though.

I agree Adam but recently Warner stated that stuff about having all BR and HD releases at the same time and having BR catch up. And we know things like HP and the Matrix should have been released a long time ago but seem to be waiting on BR catching up equally with the interactivity before releasing.

I wonder if this is going to slow Warners releases on HD. I wonder if they will still release any HD movies that are not ready to be released for BR at the same time.

Additionally even if Warner has more releases for Jan they should also be coming out on BR, we are still far behind what BR is putting out for this month unless Universal comes out with a ton of announcements
post #27 of 51
yeah like I said before, if nothing interesting pops up at CES.. I am going have to buy a Blue Ray sometime

There's like 5 Blu Ray movies I want in January.. And there all NEW DAY AND DATE.. Unlike HDDVD where there all old.

That was unexpectedly on the money. From http://dvd.themanroom.com/dvd-newsview.php?id=420 :

On the heels of the Consumer Electronics Show, Warner Home Video has made the first high definition home video announcement of 2007. January 30 will see the release of 'Beerfest (Unrated)' and 'The Wicker Man (Unrated)' on both HD-DVD and Blu-ray. Both films debuted on DVD just last month.
