PS3 Setup Question....Plz Help!!!!

I have the Panasonic 50PX600U, The best output it has is 1080i, So I am wondering if I should have my PS3 set to only support 480p, 720p and 1080i and not have it support 1080p or should I have it do 1080p as well. Which is going to give me the best picture on games and also on Blu Ray movies. Can someone explain this to me and how it works either way and why one way is better than the other. Also, how should I set it for games and should I change it around for certain games, like set it different for NHL 2k7 than for Resistance?

Thanks so much

Your tv wont take a 1080p signal.

1080i

Upgrade your firmware, and then put checkmarks on each box that your TV supports (usually everything but 1080p), then the movies will play correctly in the correct mode.

Make PS3 auto detect your TV resolution. My Pioneer 5070HD supports max 1080i but has the ability to accept 1080P too. However PS3 detected the max resolution for my screen as 1080i. go to settings and select video settings and try doing auto detect it will work. First time I did it recognized only 720P as max, next time I played a Blue Ray DVD and it went to 1080I automatically

That is correct. By selecting auto setup the PS3 will determine all resolutions your display can handle and upon disc loadup will determine maximum resolution, but remember the PS3 as of now will not display 720p outside of gameplay (referring to Blu-ray movie playback) and will select 1080i for that purpose, as long as your display is capable of displaying those resolutions, which it is.

Thanks everyone!!!!

Can anyone confirm how this works, my TV is up to 1080i but its a plasma so basically no plasmas have 1080p yet. So basically the two choices are to:
1. Have the PS3 downconvert the movie to 1080i and send the 1080i feed thru hdmi to the plasma or
2. Have the PS3 send the movie thru hdmi to the TV and have the tv downconvert the movie which is sent thru as 1080p and the TV will downconvert it to 1080i
So the TV automatically does this I am guessing since Plasmas don't have 1080p, right?
Also are my two choices that I stated above correct on how it works?
Can someone explain to me why it's better to let the PS3 downconvert it than having your TV downconvert it and how it gets you a better picture?
Thanks so much

My Panasonic 42PX60U does support 1080p input. In any case any input format will be scaled to 768p for display by your Panasonic plasma. Since the video on the BD discs is stored at 1080p, then you would want to output it to your display at 720p or 1080p (if your display accepts that format) rather than at 1080i so as to not have the PS3 need to convert the source video to interlaced then have the display have to de-interlace it to convert it to 768p for display. I have my PS3 set to support 1080p and that seems to be the best setup for use with my 42PX60. Its been reported on this forum that there are issues with the PS3 when set to 720p output (including it actually down-rezzing to 480p).

If your set is 720p native, which your's is, then 720p should be the highest checkbox you have checked EXCEPT when you sit down to watch a BR disc.. Then you need to check the 1080i box.

If you leave 1080i checked all the time, and play a game that supports both 720p and 1080i, then you'll be scaling down from 1080i instead of ouputting your set's native resolution..

Unfortunately the PS3 doesn't do 720p output from BR..

The TH-50PX600U/60U/6U will take 1080p from the PS3. I have the 6U and the picture looks superb outputting 1080p from the PS3.

It may take 1080p (which i'm surprised by) but the native resolution is 1366 x 768.. So why set the output to anything that you have to scale if you can help it?

You will be scaling either way. It depends whether or not you want to downscale or upscale and what your set will do a better job with. I have always been of the mindset of sending the TV the highest resolution. I have the belief, maybe naive, that it is better send the panny the highest resolution and have it downscale (toss out some data) the to send it something it has to upscale (extrapolate some data). Just my 2 cents.

How would you be scaling if the game is outping 720p which is the native resolution of your set?

Well almost native, but A TON less scaling then going from 1080i or 1080p down..

It's always best to match the native resolution when possible instead of discarding or creating data.

If your set can't display 1080p native, then you might be selling yourself short because most likely you'll get better framerates from 720p (less work on the Ps3's gpu)..

According to my reading the panny upscales all inputs to 1080p before downscaling to native res (see sticky in the plasma section). So inputing 1080p seems like a no brainer.

I also have a PS3 and a 42" Fujitsu plasma that can do 1080i through upscaling and doesn't support 1080p.

Personally, I have chosen to output all signals in 1080i. Common wisdom states that 1080i is the resolution that achieves the best results for Blu-ray movies. The PS3 menus and some games seem to like best 720p, but frankly it doesn't seem to be perceivable on my set.

So I stick to 1080i. But you have to understand that the results may wary according to the quality of the scaler of your set, and even the type of connection (HDMI or component). Switching resolution is very easy and fast on a PS3, and I would suggest that you test it on a couple of movies and games, and go for the mode that displays the better image.

It would be lovely though if, in a future update, PS3 added the support of separate resolution profiles for movies and games.
