4805 Bulb Died - Replace or New PJ ?

I have had a SP-4805 for only a year and the bulb appears to have died. I had only 900-ish hours. InFocus only warranted for 500 hours or 3 months. Should I drop $300+ for a new lamp or go for the IN72, which I can get for about $500 - $600?

Is it worth it trying to sell the old 4805 without a working lamp?

I'd tell you to keep it, the 4805 is a long haul PJ if you take care of it properly. Unless your a video/audiophile , or have the cash to upgrade, keep it. Otherwise, sell it to me

Only 900 hrs -- that is tough. The bulb in my 4805 died after about 2000 hrs. I bought a HC1500 for about $800 to replace it. The HC1500 is pretty comparable to the 4805, has higher resolution, is much brighter, and has sealed optics, so you get a nice upgrade for the $500 extra cost over a new bulb. The other thing you might consider is replacing the 4805 with a second used one -- that way you have some parts if you need them down the road. I've run across folks selling used 4805s with an extra bulb in the $500 range.

Almost always a person would be better off buying a new projector rather than a new bulb. When the current mainstream projectors are about four generations newer than the 4805 and with four times more resolution, the choice is easier.

Thanks for all of your inputs. As you can see this thread is very old (about 1.5 years). I ended up buying an IN72 and have been pleased.

I worked with klover (the only response back then) to try and sell it to him and that fell through. I tried selling it on eBay. After a few attempted scams and a winner that was cancelled by eBay because they didn't like something, I was turned off to the prospect of doing eBay again. I still have the unit in my basement (haven't touched it for over a year) so if anyone is seriously interested in it, let me know.

Id just hang on to it if I was you.. maybe try to find a used bulb sometime down the road. or try a remanufactured bulb... im gonna replace my BenQ PE7800 and my plan is to keep it for outdoor use.. I host a couple Large BBQ's a year at my house and will use it for that.. or take it to a freinds house for pool parties.. stuff like that... with what you would get for it, its really not worth selling it... I would guess a new bulb would cost more than you can get for it.. the same probably applies for my PE7800.. especially with the dramatic drop in price on good quality projectors in the last few years... who knows, the bulb prices might come down in the future too

Oh wow, I had not noticed the initial date of your thread. Makes a big difference. I had my mother get a 4805 first, then later I got a Panny 900, which I am using happily still, and plan to until... the bulb dies.
