For anyone that would like a boost to their wireless signal % read this

If anyone is using a linksys router and has a low signal % and would like to raise it, I have found a product that works. I bought this high gain antenna system for the linksys WRT54GS I have and it raised my signal levels from the 70-80% I was getting before (would sometimes dip into the 60's) to a constant 95-97% now. I highly recommend it to anyone who is having low signal levels and would like a boost. All you do is unscrew the old ones and screw these in! takes less than 1 minute!

http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/B0002F3...722216-3210041

Other companies also make high gain antennas but i can only vouch for the Linksys ones in this post.

On a side note, to backup my claim, i just downloaded the 883 meg NBA demo off the ps3 store. Started the download @ 11:26PM, it ended @ 11:50PM. 883 megs in 25 minutes wirelessly with a ps3 is pretty impressive to me. =)

Some routers/gateways only ship at 40 percent power and can be boosted within the admin panel. Some also ship at default channels that may be inteferred with by wireless phones and other items in the house.

Plus with an antenna like that, your whole block can share your internet connection.

not if you have it encrypted and dont broadcast your ssid. No one cares about my stupid little network enough to manage to break my regular WEP encryption, and thats all you need to keep other average users from getting on.

You can also download other firmware to your Linksys router that allows you to use one antenna to send and the other one to receive as well as boosting your power up to get even better signal!

it takes 30 seconds to break WEP

You're right, they don't care about your network, they care about getting a free internet connection. As far as WEP is concerned, it only takes 3 minutes to break. Actually, you can just download software that does it automatically now anyway.

encryption + filter by mac addy + no broadcasting SSID

The last thing I need is some pedophile breaking into my ps3

trust me wep isnt the problem.

almost 75% of the wireless network i browse in nyc doesn't have any type of encryption what so ever.

Again, they aren't trying to break into your stuff, they are trying to steal your bandwidth.

Exactly, and again, the AVERAGE USER is not going to know how to break normal encryption. If they see "secure" they arent going to get on it. Computer dorks that know enough to break the encryption arent going to want a slow wireless network connection anyway most likely, and if for some remote reason someone DID happen to start stealing my bandwith I would take different measures then. Untill this happens, simple encryption will keep 99% of users off my wireless, and in my case it has kept 100% of people off so far.

WRT to security...as long as you don't do credit card transactions over wireless, you are fine with WEP. Nobody cares about your files.

These antennas are good, but they do no miracles...directional antennas are usually better for a point-to-point bridge.

can you please show me how to increase the power on my router? I know how to change the channel but I don't understand where it states how much power its putting out. Thanks in advance.

It depends on which router you have. On mine (Linksys WRT54GS), I go to my set-up page (192.168.1.1) click wireless-->then advanced wireless settings. Down at the bottom of the page it says 'transmit power'.

i went to my linksys BEFW11S4 route advanced wireless settings...it didn't have the option for "transmit power." i guess this is an older model..so nothing i can do to increase the wifi signal except for buying that funky ass looking directional antenna.

quick question about this directional antenna. do u connect this antenna to the wireless router or to the computer/laptop that is having trouble picking up the weak wifi signal?

For best results, you would have one such antenna on each side of the point-to-point link.

Also, remember that if you have other wireless devices to keep covered, and they won't be in the same direction as your main target device, you are still better off with an omnidirectional antenna.

If you like to craft things yourself, before you spend any money, try to build one of these:

DIY antenna 1

DIY antenna 2

OK, you will laugh when you see these templates and you won't believe they would work.
Yet, if you try and you do it right, you will be amazed at how well they work.

I bought a wifi range extender box (D-Link) instead. My router is on the second floor while my PS3 is on the first in a wifi deadspot, no antenna will get the job done going through several walls in my house. Now the signal I get is at 100% consistently. I could even amplify my neighbors unprotected wifi signal with this box

Mgnff -

Could you provide a link to the item you are talking about? Also, is this something you hook directly to the PS3 via a USB port?
