Paint Speakers

I live in Thailand as my user name suggests, and would like to purchase a set of JBL Studio L's. I have found them here at a reasonable price, but they are only available in one color - cherry. I'm not sure this color will match too well with our current furniture, and I'm not seeing us ever purchasing furniture in this color.

Would I be crazy to consider buying these speakers and possibly deciding to paint them, say black, in the future if we don't like the look with our furniture??? Any one try this?

Welcome to AVS, AginThailand.

This primarily depends on your decor, painting skills and sensibilities. I would probably lightly sand the speaker's finish first with maybe 220 grit sandpaper and then wipe it down before painting so the paint takes better to the speakers.

Not crazy at all if you can handle the disassembling, any masking, and the painting itself. I am considering doing the same type of thing with some Vandersteens. However, I need to be 100% sure that they will not be screwed up, else I will have a pro do it!

Oh, one thing I forgot... You may invalidate your warranty on the speaker, so you may consider that.

I think you would be better off taking them to a furniture repair place and have them apply a laminent onto the speakers. I don't think it will change the cabnet density to the point they would sound different. If you paint them, they really could look a lot worse afterwards. The cabnets are most likely stained so you will need to do a lot of stripping to remove the color. If your really handy, you could do the laminent yourself, but speaking from experience, this is not easy to do if you want a really nice finished look. I put a laminent onto hush box I made for an amp. It took me about 6 tries to get the corners to line up.

Thanks for the responses. I'm leaning further away from doing this now. Spending that kind of money on speakers that won't look right out of the box just doesn't make sense. It's a shame because selection is limited here, and prices high. It's times like this I really miss the good ole US of A.
