In my current setup, I have a TV stand which holds the TV and the L/C/R front speakers. Originally I intended to have the sub behind the stand, but that didn't turn out to be practical. Currently it's in front of the stand, between the stand and the loveseat from which I watch the TV, but the room layout would be better (for me!) if the sub were behind the loveseat instead of in front. I know this isn't ideal, but how bad would it be? Without totally redesigning the room I'm somewhat constrained to these two choices.
