I thought that would not happen until 2008 because HDDVD has a stipulation for all there manufacturers that they are not allowed to be in a dual format player at this time.

I understand being skeptical, however this is an official press release 5 days before CES opens... I don't see a manufacturer like LG pulling a hoax this big right before CES... This is not a "small company out of nowhere" folks... I will eat my shoes if this doesn't prove to be come next week

yoyoniner : of course they had to withdraw such an announcement so early in the game. You think people would have wanted to buy into a format knowing there would be a universal player later on ? I don't think so... Most people would have waited for it to be available once official.

Actually, once this is all over the internet and print media, sales of 1-format players will be pretty low IMO, forcing all other manufacturers to do the same...

Yep any such agreements like that would raise problems with Anti competitive government watch dogs. Besides wasn't there a media center pc announced that supported both Bluray and HD-DVD?

If the DVD recorder format war is any indication, if dual format players become the norm, both formats could live side by side for years without any issues. Consumers wouldn't notice a difference and to be honest it's the best of both worlds for consumers.

Not sure if this is good news or not long term. Of course it is good news for us on AVS since we can get all the movies we want with one player, but long term I think this will confuse the consumer even more. Now you have your choice of essentially 3 formats rather than 2 when you are shopping for players if you are J6P. It just makes things all the more confusing for J6P. I've never been convinced more than right now that maybe both these formats may be DOA and the future lies with VOD HD cable. Right now I have almost 100 HD VOD titles available for "rental" from Comcast and here now we have Blu-ray players, HD-DVD players, and Blu-ray/HD-DVD players that consumers will have to choose from. And if they get the "dual format" option they will then have to choose what format to buy a certain movie on unless it is exclusive. Talk about extending the format war.... seriously the longer there are two formats the worse things will be for the success of HD on disc, and this just prolongs it.

bloody awful news. an HD disc format is not going to die. studios may have to create multiple masters forever. retailers will be POed. good news for HD fence sitters and movie fans.

As for HD VOD, a lot of people, including myself, still prefer a pre-packaged media they actually own and collect. Granted this desire will end up dying a slow death, but I don't see that happening any time soon.

Agreed 100%. I can see it now... Blockbuster carrying both the HD-DVD and Blu-ray version of every title. Joe buying the Blu-ray version and Eric telling him he should have went with the HD-DVD version. Talk about confusion. Great news for "us" though on AVS, at least in the short term since we have access to the Internet and actually WANT to research things before we buy ad nauseum. But by far the best news for "movie lovers" *long term* is for one side, either side I don't care if that's what it takes, to throw in the towel at CES and let their be ONE format.
