AV Reciever for 2007?

Thread Starter
After settling on a new 1080p LCD television this Christmas, and feeding it HD sources from a PS3, HD Digital Cable Box, and a marginal signal from an upconverting DVD player I've determined that my HK 525 AV Receiver is in need of an upgrade. Once I update my Home Theatre PC with HDMI out, I'm currently looking at picking up an AV Receiver with at least 4 HDMI inputs.

Therein lies the dilemma.

Am I missing something, or are receivers really slow to catch up to the other HD / HDMI components out there?

I've been moderately happy with my HK 525, and 3.5 years ago when it was purchased, the number of inputs on the back was quite inspiring. Yes understandably technology marches on and standards change, but I can't seem to find what I would deem a modern equivalent on the market. By looking at the flagship models in HK's product line as well as other manufacturer's, it seems that the industry is still under the assumption that consumers are purchasing units with the intention of filling 4+ svideo inputs, hooking up multiple cd players, phono and cassette players.

Is there currently anything on the market, or on the near (2 months) horizon that embraces the current shift towards digital paths for audio and video?

Pioneer Elite 82TXs has 3 HDMI in & 1 out, 84TXsi has 4 HDMI in & 1 out.
Marantz 7001 has 4 HDMI in & 1 out, 8001 has 4 in & 2 out
Denon 4306 has 3 HDMI in & 1 out.

These are the models I could think of under $2000 right off. It will take more than the adoption of a new standard to lead to the abandonment of an older one. Many folks are integrating newer equipment with older equipment that still has s-video as the best available connection. Alot of nice home-theaters are dvd-centric and use a basic cable or sat box for TV viewing. There are even folks out there still embracing Laserdisc. Modern receivers have the ability to scale composite and s-video and composite up to component and hdmi. Also, composite and s-video circuitry are so cheap and the design has already been done, why not keep it? That's not what's keeping the number of HDMI inputs low... it's the cost of the circuitry, differentiation between models/lines, and the company's read on how many of these inputs we really need.

In my opinion 3 HDMI inputs is the current sweet spot, allowing for an HD-DVD player, ad BD player or PS3, and a HDTV box. 2 may be enough for most folks but there are more and more who need 3 because of having both BD and HD-DVD. I can't see needing 4 or more unless you had HD-DVD, BD, PS3, and HDTV... this is fairly unlikely because the PS3 is a pretty capable BD player.

Until HDMI is so inexpensive to implement that it won't add to the cost of the unit and composite and/or s-video are abandoned (it'll be awhile) i doubt you'll see more than 4 inputs any time soon... the Denon $7000 5805mk2 only has 5 in and it's designed to serve 2 or 3 zones.

Both the Yamaha RX-V1700 and 2700 have 3 HDMI ins I believe.

The RX-V1700 only has 2 in & 1 out. I had it and exchanged it for the Pioneer Elite 82TXs for a few reasons including 2 in vs 3 in.

The RX-V2700 does have 3 in & 1 out.
