Couple of Questions on PS3 Wireless Controllers?

I just had a couple of questions I was wondering about the PS3 controllers.

1. If the USB cable is attached to the controller, is the controller still functioning with the Playstation 3 wirelessly? Someone at Target told me the USB cable just charges the battery and the controller is always communicating wirelessly.

2. Once the batteries on the PS3 controllers die can the controller still be used with the usb cable?

1. Not sure if the controller is working wirelessly or not. However, according to the quick reference, the USB cable automates the bluetooth pairing. So there is some level of communication between the controller and the PS3 when the USB cable is attached.

2. Again from the quick reference, the controller can be used while it is charging. So yes.
