Epic and UBI ruined shooters for me!

Thread Starter
After playing GoW and R6 solo and co-op I am having a great deal of trouble enjoying shooters like I used to. I am fricken addicted to "cover"!

I'm playing R:FoM on PS3 and F.E.A.R. on 360 and I just cannot get past the inability of my char to take cover. I feel like I am forced into an old style of gameplay. I cannot escape the feeling that something is just missing.

Dammit I was fine until these two titles (And I had used cover in GRAW and PD:0) now I am wondering why the hell every game does not have a cover system. It just makes so much sense and works so damn well...

Real life requires us to take cover from the enemy who is shooting at us. We can't all be Rambo.

well you also have to look at it like this, you're somewhat comparing two different types of shooters.

FarCry is a true FPS, an all-the-time true FPS can almost never have a good cover system. I say almost because I'm sure eventually SOMEONE can figure out a way to give you relative position when all you really have are a set of eyes, but it'll be difficult to overcome.

The only real way to have cover is to have a blend of TPS and FPS, or be full TPS, that way you actually know your butt isn't sticking out a foot when you think you're behind a wall, which can easily happen in an FPS.

compare GoW and R6 to all the TPS shooters you want, but they're not a fair comparison to games like HL2, FarCry and the like.

Trust me with the success of GoW and RB6:Vegas you'll see many cover systems in the future. Since we're on the subject I remember the first time I saw a game use a "cover system". The game was for the xbox and I believe it didn't do well (not sure if the cover system was poorly implemented or the gameplay caused the mediocre reviews but does anyone remember the title of this game?

Winback?

I could not agree more with the OP. I have been playing Resistance on the PS3 and I just can't stand it. I think that game is just lacking in every aspect from the graphics, to game play, to the weapons. I just really do not like the game, but I believe it is because GoW and R6:V have been in my 360 for months.

I really love the cover system, and really wonder how Halo 3 is going to be. I still enjoy playing Halo 2, but sometimes I wish I could just take same damn cover

Been taking cover on your commute and in the office, huh?

I hope not to see cover in Halo 3. It is a different kind of shooter and more fast paced and cover, while being more realistic, slows the game down. I love both games and they should stay different. I can't imagine being "stuck" to a wall for even half a second in Halo 2 while another player starts shooting me from behind.

I don't know why I bother making sensical posts sometimes, people just seem to ignore it.

I'll state it more obnoxiously...

YOU WILL NOT SEE COVER IN A PURE FPS FOR QUITE SOME TIME AS IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO PROPERLY IMPLEMENT DUE TO THE VIEWPOINT OF THE PLAYER.

you can't compare TPS game mechanics to a pure FPS. They're not the same!

GoW - TPS
R6 - TPS
Halo - FPS
Half-Life - FPS
FarCry - FPS

Rainbow Six is an FPS. It only switches to TPS for when you're in cover. That is the solution.
Yeah, I just bought R:FoM last week and feel the same way.

My fault, I originally had said it was a hybrid, but in my ranting I failed to do that the following times

R6 is a true hybrid in the best ways, GoW is mostly TPS with some small (sniping) FPS elements. but having a TPS aspect is critical to having proper cover, in a pure FPS, as I said... it just won't happen.

I imagine you'll start to see more FPS' on the PC that have at least TPS based cover at the minimum, it just adds so much to the gameplay.

Question, I remember in Call of Duty 1 there was some sort of cover system. You could lean out to fire. I can't seem to do that in CoD2, but the idea that they would take that away is strange

quite a few FPS games have had the lean ability in the past. Probably well more than I'm aware of, but it was rarely, if ever used properly, and always felt cumbersome in meaningless in the actual game.

Any time you could lean out, you may as well just run out to the same effect.

The cover system in Syphon Filter for the PSP is great. (Fantastic game, btw.) I just picked up this game after playing Gears of War for awhile and the cover system felt familiar.
Well if you were to implement a cover system in a FPS then when you take cover you'd only be able to look up, back, sides and at the covering object that's all. It could be easily implemented and actually would be kinda neat. The cover system in GOW is nice but you still have the ability to peek over stuff which is unreal. If your hunkered down hiding from fire you don't get to see the enemy at all, that's how it should be, your hiding, duh.

I've been bored with FPS for a while now, but my interest in shooters has been revived thanks to these titles. Very cool stuff. I'm really glad I have a 360.

tikki50, and how would you propose that the player know his arms/legs/ass are actually always behind cover?

It'd be like back when I played cs, and I'd kill someone standing half behind a wall who would say something like "how'd you kill me you hacker! I couldn't see you!"

In a pure FPS, there is no way to know the location of your body, only your field of view. Without at least some kind of Hud element that showed your body from the third person in relation to the closest physical object, it would be impossible to properly use cover.

That's why R6 does such a good job with it's hybrid version, and thats why I say you won't see it in a pure FPS any time soon.

Killswitch was actually almost identical to Gears in terms of gameplay. Move from area to area, clearing out enemies by taking cover. Hit a button to take cover, then you can either blindfire or pop out (up or to the sides) to aim and shoot. Blindfiring of grenades as well as guns. Dive/roll between cover positions.

In terms of mechanics, basically all Gears added was the squad/partner dynamic.

Gears of War makes us cover more out here in Iraq. Crazy I know.

I think we should be given the choice. If they add the option to use cover, it wont effect your choice not to use it. Halo and cover would be nice.

Its a game! Thats like saying when you play Madden its not realistic cause you have an overhead view. They are games people.

Well in all honesty that's the players fault for trying to hide behind something too small or too close to a corner.

I was thinking the same thing the other day when I was playing Halo2 with my son. it just seems rediculous not to be able to duck behind objects once you've played Gears or GRAW. I know I will be totally flamed, but i just find the overall pace and gameplay of Gears much more to my liking than Halo2. I guess I'm getting older now, but I just can't seem to successfully turn, then double jump, all the while keeping my sights trained on the enemy and pull the trigger - all at the same time. Don't get me wrong, the Halo games were revolutionary and I enjoyed playing them. But the speed of the game and the constant run and gun play just isn't for me. Gears has me totally addicted. But I have to admit, I am looking forward to the next release of Halo3. If Gears can look this good, I'm guessing Halo3 will have a few surprises for us as well.

I've had a similar reaction, though I've only played Gears so far (waiting for Best Buy to restock Rainbow Six Vegas since I have a raincheck for the $39.99 price). I was playing GoW and CoD3 at the same time, and I kept getting my butt in a bind trying to find usable cover in CoD3. It just seemed logical to do that... Add to it that around the same time we had a corporate paintball outing and all of a sudden running from cover to cover was the way to go! Looking forward to seeing where folks go with this in the future.

By the way, I also enjoyed Syphon Filter on the PSP. Too bad it's one of two games in the past 1.5 years I've actually played on the PSP. That thing has become a paperweight. I got a DS Lite for X-Mas and now plan to trade in the PSP for credit toward DS, 360, and Wii stuff.
