I want to buy one today to upgrade by the weekend. Just wondering if you guys can point me to a good 120gb hard drive that you have used with no problem.

A few pointers:

Get a 5400 RPM drive. 7200 has been tested to give you no performance improvement and generates a lot more heat.

Cache size shows some performance improvement, so try to get a drive with 8mb cache (a lot of 2.5" drives have 2mb)

Also, the momentus series of drives have shown to be the best quality / performance for the buck.

Finally, check out the warranty. Many of these come with a 1 to 2 yr warranty. The higher quality drives will have a 3 to 5 yr warranty. Warranty means if the drive goes bad you get a replacment... This has happened to me with my laptop in the 3-5 yr range and it sure comes in handy.

Why 120?

I wanna upgrade my HD but I'm looking at 500GB unless something bigger is cheap when I'm ready.

The PS3 has a 2.5" (laptop-size) SATA drive. Since 160gb is the largest 2.5" drive at the moment, to use anything larger would require housing the drive outside the PS3.

I think most people are opting for the 120gb since they run about $90-100 and are widely available. The jump to 160gb adds another ~$50, which really doesn't seem worth it.

I picked up a 160gb, 5400 RPM, 8mb 2.5" SATA HDD from memorylabs.com for $130 before shipping.

Since you are not in CA, the total price will be cheaper for you because you won't pay sales tax.

Turning the 20gb PS3 into one with a 160gb internal HDD and a 160gb external HDD (Western Digitial My Book) was fun!

If you don't mind an external drive enclosure here are two links that have potential to give you a MASSIVE amount of external storage. Heck I would settle for a nice 500GB PS3.

The 'Safety and Support' manual packed with the PS3 has complete instructions - see pg. 16 'Remove/replacing the hard disk'. And yes, it has to be a 2.5 inch Serial ATA drive.

If you backup on an external hard drive can you load the game data from the drive, without having it on the internal hard drive? I have the 160 gb Western Digital My Book and so far so good.
