I've been trying to figure that one out all day

My guess is they are trying to add new features to help seduce new buyers but I hope they don't add more without fixing current issues . I read on another board that they were working hard to improve the PS2 emulation but that might not have been the inside info that it was claimed to be , who knows . I bet we see a new firmware before the end of the month however .

Is March still confirmed for the DTS Master Audio update?
they are probably working hard on the big March update. If that's the case then I'll wait. I don't really have any problems now to speak of, but I do hope the March release adds a little more media center type functions.

Come on now, you can't expect the developers to work over the Christmas holiday, and not to mention New Years celebration / vacation. New Year's is by far the biggest holiday season for most of the Asian countries.

The 2 most important updates I'm waiting for are:

1) Upconversion of 720p games to 1080i; and
2) Upconversion of regular DVDs (to 1080i - as noted by 1 above, 720p does me no good!)

i dont think that will be possible since the os3 has no scaler chip in it.

Yes, the PS3 does.

I'm hoping that they're working on a nice, big update, instead of giving us a weekly small one.

The Lunar New Year perhaps, but that's not until February this year.

Is this a new version of IBM os2/warp?

TwinTurboJosh: Yes, the PS3 does
.

Well, thats where we would like to see a real facts. I know, Darknight has told us here several times he knows there is a scaler chip, but Sony does not let game devs use it. Games must use real 1080p rendering buffer or stick to whatever buffer size they use. Reason: its like cheating to run game in 720p and upscale pixels when there are no 1:1 pixels to fill new size. Darknight does live in an inner circle and knows more we do, but I have not seen any other references to a scaler chip.

Probably the negative buzz from owners of non-720p TVs was louder than Sony expected to see. They after all were early hdtv adopters and tend to follow web forums more than everyday Joe. They are a small number but can shout out loud in av forums.

The original firmware on the Japanese PS3 allowed for BD movie playback at 720P, instead of the current 1080i or 1080P option. This might be proof that darknight is correct.

actually numerous polls on diferent cites show that around 40% of PS3 owners are affected by this problem.
My "old" crt was made in 2005 and is affected, though it excels at all it other uses.
granted Early PS3 owners may be HD enthusiasts who understand that CRTs are king of PQ quality (black levels) and shine in displaying SD channels
