problem with my Pioneer DVR543HS

hi there, i recorded a program last night and i watched it. during the recording, there was a part where there was something wrong with the audio and video. Its hard to describe, but the video was kind of scrambled and jittery and the audio sounded like when a channel is snowy. I'm worried that there is a problem with the HDD in the unit. has this happend to anyone before?

You probably don't need to worry...I often get "scrambled" video and audio, even a regular "sag" of some sort on our daily Soaps, same channel and about the same time, but not the same place on the HDD. Just a broadcast/station glitch.

I agree with wabjxo, if you had a hard drive problem it would likely be much more serious than scrambled portions of the program. What you describe is probably just problems in the transmission of the program to your home.

no no, it was definitely the recording cause an aquaintence of mine saw the same show on live tv and didn't get that problem.

If you're convinced it's your hard drive, you must return the unit as defective.

However, if you're on a cable system and your friend lives a block or two away from you and has the same cable provider, any number of components (boosters, etc.) in the cable company's feed line...to your house...could be having a problem, or even the line from your feed pole into your house, or feedback from other components within your cable system inside your house.

If you're both OTA, using the same type antenna pointed in exactly the same direction with the same azimuth and clear-view, or if you're both on Sat with the same provider, then you might have a HDD problem.

If the HDD has a bad spot or whatever, it will probably happen again sometime, but even then, it could still be one of the above and not the HDD.

If the problem is local enough to your house (compared to his), it's entirely possible that you had a problem while he did not. I routinely get slight pixellations on HD channels for example, usually accompanied by a momentary audio loss, which I'm pretty sure does not occur even to the next-door neighbor. It is strictly just a loss in the signal between the last junction an the input to my house, maybe even later than that (only on the feed to the room with the HD cable box).

both my aquaintence and I have the same cable provider. But we live about 1 or 1.5 hours away. What I'm going to do is delete all the shows in my HDD, then from now on when i record something, i won't delete it. I will wait untill the entire HDD is full and see if it happend again. if it does, I will return the unit. sound like a plan?

Well, I wouldn't wait 'till the HDD was full or even nearly full...that's when other problems arise...not enough room for "other HDD tasks"...unless you never edit or copy.

Living that far apart, I would say your one occurrence was a Line F*rt. If it occurs again, I'd call the cable co. and ask them to check the line that feeds your house for bad components, etc. They may end up saying it's "feedback" from something in your house...if so, I suggest you try to find loose cable ends, bad splitter, etc. yourself...it's surprising what problems a very slightly loose RF cable connector can cause! I use a small wrench to tighten mine snugly.

That kind of sounds like overkill to me. Picture glitches on cable systems are pretty common in my experience, and when it happens to me I just shrug my shoulders and move on. I know they're cable problems because I sometimes see them when I'm watching TV live.

If you're really concerned and have a VCR, you could try recording shows on both units for awhile - if you encounter problems with the Pioneer copy you could check the VCR copy to see if the glitch also appeared there. Anything that shows up on both recordings will be a transmission fault, while a Pioneer problem would be revealed by a glitch that shows up on it but not on the VCR copy.

I agree. Overkill. And some advice to all. Don't panic if you see one of those "emergency service alert tests" on recorded material!
