YCbCr vs RGB? What's the difference?

In my Blu-Ray video output options on the Playstation 3, it gives me these two options. What should I set my Playstation 3 to output? What's the difference?

Or should I set it to auto output? (3rd option)

Auto is pretty much guaranteed to work, and is what I use. Without trying to sound like I know what I'm talking about, the difference is in the type of HD Monitor or TV that you are using. A few data monitors (maybe just pc types) will use RGB, but most are YCbCr.

RGB requires 2 additional connectors for V and H control
YCbCr has that built in to the 3 connectors

This is over HDMI though if i recall the option correctly. For those who bought into HD TV's before HDMI (like myself) and are using an HDMI to DVI cable RGB 8-bit the maximum it can support so auto and RGB are your only options.

You are referring to analog connection cables, which is not what the option is referring to. RGB can actually be 3, 4, or 5 connectors (RGBVH being 5). This setting on the PS3 is strictly for Blu-ray playback via HDMI.

A search for RGB in the Blu-ray hardware forum yields the following threads:

New PS3 firmware properly outputs Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr over HDMI for BD

YCbCr vs RGB? What's the difference?

Often times using the SEARCH function will allow you to find answers faster than starting a new thread.
