Geez, little rich for my blood.
For that much you could almost get an HD-A2, a 20GB PS3 and a 360 core system!
IF this is a TRUE Combo unit, that has all the bells and whistles, and works great on BOTH formats.
Thats a BIG IF, BUT if it does all the things these other players do....

ITs a STEAL.

I don't know what folks are smoking, but BD players cost as much or more by themselves(I don't count game consoles, sorry), the A2 is 400, the Xa2 is 8-900.

TotalHD can suc my sac, I want to pay good $ ONCE, NOT everytime I purchase a disc!!

Geeeez

it's all a conspiracy! a plot with every aspect of the industry STICKING IT to sony and blu-ray in general. in all that has transpired and with these future events rapidly upon us, it would seem 'pointless' to purchase any blu-ray media of any sort. the only thing holding we the consumer hostage is studio support for blu-ray. but i feel that may quickly diminish. all of this is IMHO.

God this and the dual format disk makes me sick somehow. I agree with the above poster about it being a conspiracy.

Seeing this I'm going to sell my addon for the 360 and see if I can make some of the money back.

This isn't about giving the people a better movie experience.....it's all about corporate money and it's rubbish.

I'm no longer a supporter of either side. My 1080p TV will now view standard DVD's and HD cable. I'm not giving my money to any of these corporate giants unless they start caring about us....the viewers.

They can't even get the single format players to work right. good luck with this one.

Zip, flame suit on.
the press release is regarding their dual format pc drive so wouldn't the price of the dual format stand alone player be a bit higher than 1200?
$1199? If that's the price, then I'm out.

Thats quite an exaggeration! Its just been the one disc (The Descent) that won't play on the Pioneer and Sony and the Pioneer rep claims it is an authoring error by Lionsgate. If you must bash then at least do so honestly and accurately.
Wow, I'm glad I bought two seperate machines, the HD-A1 and the Philips BDP9000, I saved about $300 instead of buying 1 dual-format player.
Yeah it will street for less, continue to drop. Whatever this is the beginning of the end and it didn't come soon enough. Once these rule the roost you are going to find out really which format the studios really prefer in replication and interactive features.

I hate to break your heart, but they don't care about the viewers either - just CA$H!!

The player is a real bargain. No question. The problem is two things.

1) Most of us have already invested in equiptment we will not make our money back on.

2) It's hard to see the value in Blu Ray for the price when HD DVD delivers great content.

When this thing drops, it will sell like hotcakes. But they have to make back all the R&D money first, with the help of early adopters. Soon everyone will have dual format players. Unfortunately, it will hurt the BD stand alone makers almost as bad as the PS3 does.
Interesting, considering that the new player still plays Blu-Ray, why or how would it hinder BD sales? Content by now is equal in terms of PQ and AFAIK BD has better AQ.

So, what is the reason for the studios who were BD exclusive so far, to switch to HD DVD, given the fact that new player will play both formats, and BD sales are dong better as time passes.

All that assuming that the new LG player will come bug free and fully functional for both specs, which I do doubt.

i will not buy a dual format player..................... Yet

They all want a piece of the pie, one way or another. I doubt that this would be an option.
im just glad someone is going to release a dual format player. thats def great news for the future when they come down to 200 bucks (now we can say they actually exist)
As someone else has already said...the GGW-H10N unit costs $1200. This is also a BluRay writer.

I doubt LG would put a burner in a duel player so that could drop the cost a little...
As much as I love Gary and his posts (believe me I respect you buddy), But I gotta bring this back up. Nope, dual format players are not a pipe dream .
I'll buy it.

Past LG products are a breeze to hack for region coding, so hopefully that tradition will continue with the BT100.
$1199? No way. Toshiba will probably announce a $300 HD DVD player at CES, and this will be the end of the format war. Blu-Ray players will always costs too much, and this will be their doom.

This is what I'm thinking as well. I'll pick one up and poke around for a region-free SD hack.

Yeh right on there!

I smell a deal done with LD even if it does materialize in sufficient quantites. A well timed and executed tactical manouver, for the HD DVD camp.

As another data point, CED today intimated that early figures for LG's dual device were in the $1499 range, so even though I have no idea what the final MSRP will be, $1199 wouldn't be too bad in my book.
Too rich for my blood, but I'm just a normal J6P. My cutoff point for components is $499, and even that is pushing it.

I guess it would be more accurate to say my "no brainer" cutoff is $399, and my "I have to really really really want it" cutoff is $499.

What? who are you responding to? And if someone already said something why are you restating?
This doesn't appear to be the player most of us anticipated though. I know I was thinking of a single drive with the NEC chip included and support ofr the audio advanced codecs. This sounds like a unit with possibly 2-3 drives. And thinking about it I don't really want a r/w player.
Well, there is some confusion as to whether or not that really is the price. Someone earlier raised the possability that this is the price for a BD Burner/HD-DVD player. That would actually be quite an interesting product.

Even if this is the price though, all it really needs to do to shake things up is exist. If theres one dual-format player, then there will be more in short order. Any machine that isn't a dual-format player after that will be perceived as inferior.

Also, $1199 today should be $799 in a year, $499 in two years, and $199 in three years (or something along those lines). As prices fall, anything that isn't dual-format will get squeezed out. Not many will buy at $1199, but after the first price drop it will be quite a bit more palatable.

EDIT: It will be interesting to see th actual announcement. Whether it has one drive bay or several, what the actual price is, when it will be available... its an exciting time.

I like it................

High end $$$ = dual format player
Budget end = HD-DVD player

BD = format w/o a player market = gone pecan.
