Golf Channel HD / Versus HD - Now on Comcast!

Following through on the announcement from last November, Comcast today (1/4/7) introduced Golf Channel HD / Versus HD, listed on the IPG as 'CSHD'. First seen on Comcast cable systems in Detroit, Seattle & Chicago.

Comcast to Launch New HD Channel
By James Hibberd Television Week

Comcast is about to announce the creation of new high-definition cable channel combining content from its Versus and Golf Channel brands.

Beginning in January, the new network will simulcast Golf Channel programming by day and Versus (formerly OLN) content by night. Comcast, which owns both networks, plans to call the channel Golf Channel/Versus.

The channel will join Comcast's lineup of networks consisting of E!, Style, Golf Channel, Versus, G4 and regional sports outlets. Comcast has a commitment from DirecTV to start carrying the new channel some time next year. Comcast will gradually begin rolling out the new network on its own systems starting in January, a Versus executive said.

Golf Channel/Versus will represent an unusual entry among HD networks. Most cable brands launch either a simulcast HD network (such as ESPN and TNT), or a stand-alone channel that combines content from several brands (such as Discovery HD Theater and MTV's MHD).

By mixing content from two channels, yet airing as a simulcast during different times during the day, Golf Channel/Versus aims for the best of both worlds.

"We think this is the simplest, easiest and best way to go right now," said Marc Fein, senior VP of programming and production for Versus.

Mr. Fein said Comcast decided to combine the channels because that solution gives bandwidth-strapped carriers more incentive to offer the HD servicewhich is free to cable and satellite operators that currently run Versus and Golf Channel.

By running a simulcast feed, Comcast hopes to decrease viewer confusion, Mr. Fein said.

"If you want to watch the hockey game, you can see it in either standard definition or HD at the same time," he said.

Under the Versus brand, the channel will initially offer HD hockey, boxing, bull riding and field sports, which will air from 7 p.m. to midnight. Executives still haven't decided whether Versus's tentpole event, the Tour de France, will be available in HD, as the network relies on a feed from an overseas partner, Mr. Fein said.

"There have been good conversations; it is possible," Mr. Fein said.

Golf Channel programming will include an exclusive HD airing of the PGA Tour and hundreds of hours of play from other tournaments, and will run from noon to 7 p.m.

On Comcast's cable systems, the new channel will take the place of INHD 2, which is being combined with INHD in January after being slowly phased out on several systems.

Although not yet announced, at the least I expect to see Golf Channel HD coverage start 1/26 & 1/26 for the first two rounds of the Buick Invitational, maybe sooner for the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, 1/17-1/21. All early round PGA coverage from the mainland US (and probably Canada) for CBS & NBC events will be in HD.

Golf Channel programming is actually on the new channel right now. HD programming will probably be what is beginning 2/1, hopefully sooner.

Will they still show The NHL on Versus on INHD for those who don't have Comcast?

It seems that way.

Game on 1/9 (Detroit-Colorado) is listed in my program guide on INHD.

Fantastic. When I get home I will have another HD channel. Comcast Seattle has added this, UniHD, and MHD recently. Keep 'em coming Comcast. I admit I really know nothing about this channel at all, and looking at the schedule, it looks like all new programming to me. Elk Country Journal here I come!

I'm feeling the love between these two great cities. And I finally get to use this line here:

[does best Dr. Klahn voice] "Take him to Detroit...or Seattle."

There's a slight implication (from The Golf Channel e-mail quote) that TGC's 1080i coverage will be both weekday early rounds and the weekend, versus the previous coverage of SD weekday coverage by USA Network, TGC, ESPN, then only CBS/NBC/ABC weekend 1080i/720p coverage. Is TGC 1080i 4 days per match? BTW, last night's SD from Hawaii via TGC in 480i was very crisp and mostly free of the dreaded edge enhancement--with the exception of an overhead i-cam (?) showing players teeing off -- John

The Golf Channel has full coverage of the first 3 events of the year and the 8 events that will now follow the Tour Championship/FedEx Cup. They will also have complete coverage of a few events opposite WGC events. For everything else, except the 4 majors, they have Thurdsday & Friday coverage only with CBS or NBC having the weekend.

DirecTV is specifically mentioned in the press release yet no indication of it on DirecTV. What gives?

The Masters is probably the best HD on TV. Isn't it past your bedtime?

Perhaps, but NASCAR looks really good in HD too, Still, you won't catch me watching cars driving around in a circle.

Seriously, if golf (or NASCAR) is your thing, that's cool but don't justify it simply because it's "probably the best HD on TV". A pristine picture doesn't automatically equal watchable programing.

It is VSGLF in Jacksonville as well and has been up since early 1/1. This channel is extremely important to me as >50% of my TV viewing is TGC. I so want to get rid of Comcast but ever since I heard this channel was coming I go rid of those thoughts. Golf on TV is definitely boring to the majority of people and I'm fine with that but I love it.

Ok, you don't like watching golf. That doens't mean that golf isn't watchable to those of us who like to watch golf and that those of us who do watch golf, are happy to have more golf on HD.

If you have VSGLF, CBS & NBC, you'll see a ton of golf in HD this year.

What other HD programming is the Golf channel supposed to carry other than live tournament coverage?

I would assume that eventually studio and original programming will be done in HD. Replays of previous events that were HD will be in HD, highlights shows, etc.
any way to tell when it will come to certain areas? not on here the bay area, although until the hd programming starts, it is not a big deal.

surprised tgc isn't starting their hd coverage with the first cbs broadcast, the buick 1/25-28. cbs should have it in hd, and i understood that tgc will be using their equipment for hd weekday coverage. it would be nice to see that venue in hd with the us open coming next year.
