More mouth watering news for HD DVD supporters, The PC writer drive will ship THIS MONTH

Quote:

TOKYO, January 4 /CNW/ - Toshiba today brought the wide ranging
capabilities of HD DVD to the desktop PC with the announcement of a standard
height HD DVD drive able to read and write to HD DVD and to standard DVD and
CD discs. Sample shipments of the new drive, SD-H903A, are scheduled to start
this month.

Quote:

The new drive takes full advantage of the shared physical structure of HD
DVD discs and standard DVD discs, which allows it to read and write to HD
DVD-R discs, to read the diverse line-up of discs in the HD DVD-ROM disc
family, including twin format disc and combination discs, and to read and
write to standard DVD and CD discs, using an optical pick-up head with only a
single objective lens.

The new drive is also fully compliant with the EU's RoHS directive, which
came into force in July 2006.

most probably cheaper than the current BD writers .. the guess is now, how much cheaper .. with BD putting BD writer is standalone BD players and the 25K sales figure .. i dont see the price drop soon for BD. Anyhow, hopefully, the HD DVD writer would be as consumer friendly as the other HD DVD hardware

Anybody have a pic of the drive?

EDIT: Nevermind, I found one myself.

It had better be no more than 60% of the price of a Blu-ray burner, since it can only write 60% as much data! Also, where's the HD-DVD-RW support? With the price of HD-DVD-R media I'd hate to risk burning a coaster...

Ah, but think how much time you'll have contemplating this?

15GB: 55 minutes
30GB: 110 minutes.

This is a 1x drive. I thought the claim was the first HD DVD burner would be a 2x?

Ah well, it is a first gen speed DL DVD burner too! (2.4x)

To be fair, it is the price of the media that should be only 60%. The 1x speed and being two generations behind in DL DVD burning and one for DVD should cause a significant discount.

On display next week at CES: Toshiba SD-H903A HD DVD & Super Multi DVD burner

Write
HD DVD-R SL1: 1x; HD DVD-R DL1: 1x
DVD-RAM: Max. 3x; DVD-R SL1: Max. 8x
DVD-R DL1: Max. 2.4x; DVD-RW: Max. 4x
DVD+R SL1: Max. 8x; DVD+R DL1: Max. 2.4x
DVD+RW: Max. 4x; CD-R: Max. 16x
CD-RW: 4x; High Speed CD-RW: Max. 10x
Ultra Speed CD-RW: 10x

Read
HD DVD-R SL1, DL1: 1x; HD DVD-ROM: 2.4x
DVD: Max. 8x; CD: Max. 24x
The main problem though is the speed.

HD DVD-R write and read are only 1X. (It's 2.4X for HD DVD-ROM though.)
CD-R is only 16X too. I would have preferred at least 24X.
8X DVD+R/-R is fine though, although DL DVD-R is only 2.4X.

So, who's gonna release the first Blu-ray/HD DVD burner? We're counting on you, LG-Hitachi.

but who wants to wait 3 years, pay now or play later
post #16 of 26
I'll wait. maybe not 3 years but I'll wait for now.

I plan to start building a powerhouse gaming/HTPC powerhouse PC next month. If this thing is under 500 bucks I may consider one.

with BD's storage superiority .. they should just stick to recordable media
post #18 of 26
My first CD-ROM drive was $500, plus $200 for the proprietary interface card.

Enhanced color space. The new drive supports BTB-beiger than black.

I suppose SL BD movies are similarly cheaper

And "pip" bd50 should be quite a bit higher. May be even double, since it has the movie twice !

LG Bluray Burner + HD DVD Reader

This is kinda what you were looking for but not quite. 4x BD burning btw...

reinforce the belief that Blu-ray should be used solely as recordable media !!
