How does a Faroudja DVP-1000 stack up today?

In a system that is RGB output based, is the PQ of the newer scalers that much of an improvement? I have an NRS and have run into limitations due to source changes. I have a line on a reasonably priced DVP-1000, which would seem solve my new source issues. If you want specific info on my setup, look down in the posts to one on CRT/Plasma processor recommendations.

Hi Dan,

From what I understand, the only difference between the DVP-1000 and NRS was the selectable output resolutions on the DVP-1000. Now you can just send in your NRS to Faroudja for the "universal upgrade" effectively making it a DVP-1000.

What type of limitation is the NRS giving you? You mean like no auto source switching?

Cheers,
BR

Couldn't the DVP-1000 and DVP-1010 also accept a 480p input? The NRS was 480i in only. I was in a similar boat as Dan and was looking into the 1000 and 1010. Ultimately I ended up with a Lumagen HDP as I wanted the ability to deinterlace 1080i should I grab a HD-DVD player.

I will say that the NRS I had produced one of the most 3-D, best color picture I've seen in my setup so far. However, the HDP is just about to go in so final judgement will need to wait a bit longer.

I also found that the 1000 or 1010 would have costed a few $100 more.

The DVP-1000 will process HD inputs, including 1080i, to the selected output rate of up to 1080p, although my plasma is 1280x768 and my 8" CRT would probably max at 960p. Even if you do the NRS universal rate upgrade, the maximum output rate is 1024p and it will only process 480i inputs, everything else must be passed through. The DVP-1000 will also process DVI progessive inputs. The 1010 seems to add HDCP compliance to the 1000. At least this is my take on it from the manuals. Does processing of HD inputs improve things or add a step that can actually degrade the signals? HD sure looks good passed right on through to my projector now, whether 720p or 1080i. Maybe I don't know what I am missing.

I have an NRS-DVI, it seems mostly to be intended to upconvert composite and component video to DVI or 1080i/720p.

From the manual: "Component (BNC) Auto-detect:
480i/480p sent to upconverter, 1080i or 720p sent to pass-through."

I didn't spend much money on it, but it seems useful as the upconvert system in my off-brand plasma really stinks. I wish it would give me some more scaling options though, the output is pretty much WYSIWYG beyond the basic image controls.

I replaced an NRS with a DVP-1000 about a year ago because I wanted all my inputs, including HD, connected to 1 device. I have been quite happy with the DVP-1000, even though it only does bob and weave for HD. It doesn't have HDCP, which I don't need.

To me, the Faroudja products still rank highly in the realm of SD performance (deinterlacing and scaling). I scale at native rate to my 1280x768 plasma and DVD's are close to HD quality just like my NRS was. HD is an improvement over the plasma's scalar, although not dramatically so.

If it does what you're interested in at a decent price, I would recommend it.
