When you upgrade equipment, What do you do with your older components?

Thread Starter
Hi gang! Since we all love that fresh and new component to light up our home theaters and upgrading is a must for home theater enthusiasts on the bleeding edge of technology. So my question is this: "What do you do with your older, unused components?"

I have typically sold them to friends. For a few years this worked well as I would get the latest and greatest, while my friends would get a pre-owned, well taken care of (remember, I go by ocd_guy and I don't fool around when it comes to cleanliness! ) piece of equipment that they are proud to own for a great reasonable price. Since none of my friends want or need that newest gadget for the home theater market, the buying of my pre-owned components is a real treat for them. Plus, they get all of the free technical support to go along with it.

Now I ask you. Do you sell you pre-owned components to friends or family? Pawn them? eBay them? Trade them in at select electronics stores towards the purchase of new components? Sell them through your local newspaper, etc.? Keep them in the attic? Whatever it is, I am truly curious. I wasn't too sure which in any sub category to post this thread as there are quite a few choices, so I thought I would start here since many of us are trading our HDA1's for HDA2's.

Ebay

If it doesn't go into a bedroom or another room in the house, I'll either sell or give to family members.

I sell them on craigslist and thru my local newspaper.

I also sell them on Videogon.

Piled up in the spare bedrooms and the basement. I still have a betamax player and a couple of LD players lying around somewhere under all the other stuff .

I normaly sell it or put it into another room.

Audiogon, videogon, home theater forum classifieds and AVS classifieds....by paying $35 for the year you are supporting AVS and allows you to post for sale ads in the classifieds.

I do the following:

1) will it be useful in another room? if so do that.
2) offer for sale to friends/family/co-workers (most of my stuff ends up here)
3) eBay as last resort.

I usually get 'er done with #2, especially since I ask reallllly low price for my used stuff... I just sold my Sanyo PLV-Z3 to a co-worker for 300 clams.

Ebay or in the closet..

I either keep it for future use or a back-up, or give it away to in-laws/freinds.

I donate to charity, give to a family member, or move to a different room, depending on the equipment.

Usually ebay, to the highest bidder - but only if I know I can get decent coin for it. Or I'll also use A'gon. I've got to fund the upgrades somehow, ya know! My place is not that big, so don't have the luxury to amass a huge collection of metal boxes!

If my old item won't/can't sell for what I think it's worth to me, I'll "store" it at a friend's house who can benefit from using it. Heck, I once took over a spare stereo (old Fisher receiver + EV speakers) to a friend's house for a party, and got it back about 5 years later...

Now just have to figure out what to do with my two Yammy 2300s and two 2300 Mk2s. I wish I'd quit finding bargains!

I still have my Atari 400 so you can just guess what my answer is...

I do a little of everything. Sometimes I will give my old gear to my mom and step father, sell it to friends/family, or even sell it on eBay. I try not to go the eBay route, but sometimes you just have too.

Me too.

Smallish price tag I'll hand me down to my folks or family. Big item and it's on eBay to help finance the product replacing it.

I usually try to find another use for it...e.g. I replaced my upconverting HDMI Panny S-77 DVD player in my setup with the Toshiba HD-A1 HD-DVD player last April. However I recently came into some DVD-A disks and wanted DVD-A playback capability (which the Panny has and the Tosh does not) so the Panny went right back into my A/V setup!

I haven't been happy with ebay prices considering the condition, so I craigslisted my LCD. I was pleased with that sale, and I'm thinking of doing the same with my a1.

Well so far I've either keeped it or given it away. I had a older RCA dvd player before I got my upconverting player. Give it to the grandparrents. It plays regulat DVDs and CDs no recorded stuff, didn't have progessive scan. At the time I payed 300 bucks for it.
My upconverting player was 200 and it reads everything.

Add bass shakers and power them with the old equipment...if really old - put in a yard sale for $10, and enjoy someone trying to talk it down to $5 - great fun.

I dont do a thing! look at my equipment list!

who still uses a 25 year old amp? I do!

I either use them in another room, put them away as a backup in case the new one breaks, or give them away to friends.

I love this idea! Why not give your "old" equipment to us less fortunate souls?

I didnt mean it like that. Didint mean to offend.

I honestly have no friends into HT, and dont think it would be worth the effort and shipping to sell it. I would get more out of giving it to someone. Not to say that someone is less fortunate, just that perhaps they havent got around to buying one yet.

It could go ywo ways:
1.You never update your equipment, at least not since the 80's
2.Or you just keep all your old stuff.

I have done a bit of almost all of the above.

-Sold or given to family and friends
-Sold at local hamfests/ham radio flea markets
-Sold on Ebay
-Used in other rooms
-Kept as spares
-Sold on AVS Forum classifieds

It seems we always end up with more rooms, so the sound gear just moves somewhere else. We're on our 6th house.....and now we're adding on another three rooms (one of which is a dedicated HT).
